Does anyone else not like the new bombard system?

Didn't like it at first, like it now. It's good for game balance, even if it hampers my ability to rampage across the map. You just have to unlearn your civ1/2/3 habits and you'll love the new system.

I though (sic) artillery was fine in Civ 3. Yeah the AI had a hard time with it, but that was a lack of programming issues, not an overbalance.

For those crying about the way arty was in Civ 3, there would be an easy fix.

I can't wait for the SDK, or a patch to fix this, because this has got to be a huge oversight.
Everyone on the Internet is a 1337|-|aXXoR d00d ... do YOU have any experience coding the GREATEST COMPUTER SIMULATION GAME OF ALL TIME?

Artillery has been FIXED strategically speaking. Artillery's REAL target is now a city's cultural defenses. Put a couple of Collateral Damage Two arty on your target city and tell me how "bad" Artillery sucks.

(No more cultural defense, or on the last city in the current campaign? Throw the arty onto the fire to soften up the defenders and snag some sweet XP for your Line Units ;) )

The ONLY thing missing from the whole Bombardment matrix is that they should be able to bombard ANYTHING with an "unnatural" defense -- ie, Fortified, or an actual Fortification -- in those instances, Arty should be able to do the exact same thing that it does to city defense #'s...

Artillery in Civ 3 was a crutch for the weak. I felt dirty using that tactic.

I'm a dirty boy  :crazyeye:

Agreed whole heartedly Thrag. Civ4 is a NEW game. You just can't take your Civ3 strategies and expect it to work in Civ4. ICS is DEAD DEAD DEAD.

Civ4 demands new strategies so the people using Civ3 strategies don't have anywhere to go. They have to build up experience or wait for others to write walkthroughs (I really don't understand what's the fun not finding out things for yourself but anyway). That's probably why I don't see any 'this is how you kick Civ4's AI ass on Immortal level' stories yet. I'm sure the beta testers who played for 2 years now are eager to do so, but probably they'll feel reluctant to do so.

Are you all kidding? civ4 is the first bombard system that works! In C3C I never used bombard units. They were costly slow and defenseless. Stack Chinese riders or Cavalry and just widthraw when losing. 3 times as much mobility and you take cities much faster, plus they can defend themselves.

As far as "suicide arty" goes... Do you really think a catapult could damage anything without getting close enough to risk it's own destruction?

I like the new system because it helps the tactical aspects of the game. It's a counter to SoD. To do stack damage without risk would be waaayyyy overbalanced.

I agree and disagree john galt.

Bombard really worked in civ3 - almost too good, I felt dirty like Mujadaddy when I used it - it was kinda cheating.

In civ4 I think they have balanced it well though I would like to be able to bomb fortifications.

If you want to destroy improvements, take a small stack and pillage the countryside. Works great, hardly any opposition and I did it in their critical cities that I had no plans on attacking. Allowed my economy to get ahead and slowed down their counter.

Maybe you should learn the game before saying something isn't there??

YOU CAN BOMBARD, YOU CAN BOMBARD WITH NAVY AND WITH ARTY/CANON/CATAPULT.

Go near a city and you will see the red target, or you press "B", it will automaticaly bombard the city.

Please.. learn the game before you complain.

*sigh* Navies can bombard other units? Maybe you should try reading comprehension before posting. WE KNOW navies can bombard cities, the problem that they can ONLY bombard cities, hence the problems addressed in this post.

Please... think before you post.

I've played every Civ since the first, and I love this system best of all by far. I feel like my cat/arts are actually "bombarding", and even just hitting the "B" key makes them automatically attack the city. Military units take damage too if the arts are leveld up right. I usually put 2 or 3 melee units in Fortify (on a hill or mountain next to a city if possible) and any counter attack against my art is useless.

The mixed forces part of this game is my favorite improvement in the Civ series by far; and no more "Stacks of Doom" too :goodjob: and keeps the RTS tactics of the past Civ games somewhat in check :D
