I just bought this from Ebay and it has not yet arrived. It is a CD.

I have Windows 98 (and hope to later get Win XP.)

Tell me about the windows version. Does it work properly? Will it need to be patched? Do any of you have this rather than the DOS floppies?

I am thrilled to be getting this even though the manual is not a paper one but on the CD.

I have Colonization on CD and it worked fine for me on Win 98. In fact it worked better than it does now on XP. The patch fixes a few minor bugs but the game plays OK without it. One big advantage of the patch though is that is adds a map editor so you can create your own maps. See the 'Map Editor' thread below.

Please tell me where I can find the patch. And how to apply it.

I'm glad Col works fine on your Win 98. That is encouraging. (I'll worry about XP later as I don't have an xp computer yet.)

Thanks for replying.

I have uploaded the patch for Col Windows:
http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/100907/Patch_Windows_Colonization_col95.zip

It is a simple zip, you unzip the files into the folder where you have Colonization.
BUT BEFORE DOING IT, install your game: it is very very possible that your game already includes this patch and I am almost sure you do not need it!
If your COLONIZE.EXE is from 19 June 95 or later (or Coldata9.dll from 01 June 95 or later), do not use the patch as it is already applied in your version.

Note that is is an old original patch, done by Microprose, and it was designed for Windows 95. As you use W98, it should be very fine!!!

I thought that Colonization for Windows was in public domain!! I was going to upload it for you, but then I realized that you say that you paid for it! :mischief: Oups! Then it is not public domain and I was going to be in trouble with the moderators!!!!

From time to time, I still play Colonization, on my Windows XP SR2 machine and as far as I recall it works fine...

... I have just re-installed my copy of Col Windows (the copy I was going to upload for you before understanding that it is NOT yet public domain, or is it??)
My version is: 3.1415926 24-May-95.
If your version is the same, it will work on any systems (you see the version when you start colonize.exe, written in green on top of the menu screen)

Clicking on COLONIZE.EXE, it works perfectly on my Windows XP-SR2 machine.

The DOS version also works on XP-Service Release 2 (SR2). If any trouble, you can right click on COLONIZE.EXE, go to "properties", then the tab "compatibilities", select and test the different options.
But I am convinced it will work fine...
In case not, tell me/us.

Thanks so much. I hope my copy of Colonization (bought from someone on Ebay) will arrive today - or tomorrow. Then I will fire it up and see what version I have before I attempt to patch it.

Thanks again. I'll let you know.

I had a Windows version once, but it was buggy to the point of unplayable. Went back to DOS, no complaints since.

I agree, the DOS version (in its final release) is very stable and works well (I found it easier to use the DOS with XP than with W98!)
I have a copy of this game on all my computers since 1996, and, except with the 1st release of the DOS version, I had since no crash I can remind of...
There are no real differences between the DOS and Windows versions (difs are: menu windows are stretched under DOS, while the resolution is a bit better with the Windows version + menu on top for Windows vs classic but simple keyboard commands with the DOS- and it is as far as I can see the differences...)

Hey Good People,

I wanted to update everyone on the news at CPH...I've got the Colonization for Windows page up finally...and I added a few extra downloads. Go here.

You can download that little manual from the jewel case now...I've also added some labels.

I will try to look for more but I still have to do the Colonization for Amiga page and there really isn't a whole lot out there for the Amiga version.

Have fun!

You're welcome!

I will continue to look for more good downloads...you'd be surprised what is out there...
