i dont know anyone that does. and with the new PTW Civ 3 expansion with mulitplayer coming out i think this game might be forgotten dont u agree? Civ3 rocks!!!!!!!

I play games by "turns". One month (or what it takes) I play, let's say, Civilization III from the begining to the end, and then I play another one, and so on, and later I play again the games I have played before. I include in this rutine all the Civilization games, Age of Empires II, Empire Earth, Pharaoh, Zeus Master of Olimpus, Tropico, Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds, etc. Good games such as Alpha Centauri (wich I consider a Civilization Game) are games I will play again and will not let get dust.

By the way, I never play multiplayer games with this type of games. Multiplayer is fun for a game such as Unreal, where the game lust for some minutes. Those great games I take my time to think each movement, some I must save and resume for days, and it would be very boring to play against another one like me.

By the way, how many years old is Alpha Centauri?

It was released in 1999.

I still play SMAC, for the same reasons some people still play Civ2: replayability. It is an almost perfect strategy game, with a lot of paths to follow and a lot of possible interactions between the player and the game world. Such games never die, they are everlasting classics, even if their graphics become outdated or another game implements better ideas with respect to some design choices.

Since I bought SMAC, I have gone through some changes on my system, reinstalling the OS, upgrading some parts, buying a new hard disk, you know the stuff. And everytime I need to do it, the first game I reinstall is SMAC. Pure gold. :)

When my computer is running (not much the past month) I play Alpha about every other day. Some times for 20 min, others for 6 hours. I have yet to find a game I like better.

SMAC +X is in some cases even more fun than Civ3. :yeah:
I really like the background story and most importantly SMAC has WONDER MOVIES!!
I also think the AI is sometimes more adept in SMAC, it doesn´t rely so heavily on cheating as in Civ3.
The last Civ3 GOTM was fun, though. But SMAC never gets tedious.
:D

Just 3 years and a game is supposed to be "old"?

I still play it. I got a multiplaying game going with a friend of mine now. Every Friday/Saturday night for about 2 hours. This is about the 5th mp game we played ... I lost a few, he's lost a few .. it's getting kind of down and dirty now.

Sometimes I play without mp. I love playing the Drones. :)

Where can you get the expansion now days? I have pretty much mastered single player and would like the new factions to play to change things up. Any ideas for me on this?

Anyone have a copy of the expanion to sell?

Yes, unfortunately the stopped producing the X-Pack.

But the stores sold and some still sell the Planetary Pack, which has both the original and the expansion. :yeah:

Other than that, Ebay definitely has several auctions running, do check the various sites though (e.g. ebay.com, ebay.co.uk, or whereever you are).
:D

I play alpha centauri but I've never played it online :( lol I guess I'm going to have to play it online :) ummmm.

I run into it all the time. Used game pc shops.. pawn shops ... etc.

My disk recently took a cra(P) .. I bought it later for 3 bucks. Moo HA HA! Pawn shop had no idea what that was worth. :) Perfect condition.

Anyway.. ebay.. amazon.com etc.

Actually truth be told aside from a sequel or re-release of SMAX the best thing that could have happened to SMAC(X) was release of CIV3. Ardent fans of SMAC were dissappointed in CIV3 and went back in droves to play SMAC.

Still SMAC'ing.

I'll wait to see if PTW is worth anything before I reinstall CIV3.

I too have returned to SMAC (I couldn't stand SMAC-X) and once again have been drawn in...

The ability to personalise and role-play your faction in addition to the vast number of features in the game aswell as a convincing setting make this game wonderful.

I always seek the high mountains and valleys to build my perfect society which always at some point has to deal with the nihilist Yang :D

It is a shame that this game never captured more imaginations leading to a sequel (re-do the original but with improvements in graphics, tougher A.I, yet more society options, more realistic factions) being made.

Even as it is I think it a better than Civ3...and I'm a true civfanatic!

wha? P L A Y as the drones? the only thing theyre good at is getting nuked...

I still play SMAC, but then I still play colonization and settlers1 too. Well, great games will always be great games.

I ordered SMAC a few days ago. Civ 3 implement new features but SMAC has definitely advantages and features that Civ 3 don't have
- Social engineering
- Far more interaction in diplomacy
- The Planetary Council with all these very important decisions that can be taken
- Terrain levelling (voluntarily or not)
- Customisable units
- The famous planet buster (far more realistic on the effects than the nuclear strikes in the Civs)
- A great atmosphere

Only the graphics are a bad point, but in this kind of game, who cares ? The gameplay is the most important !!

This at only 6.25€ (6.25$) !! :D
