Does Anyone Still Play This Game????

Never played Civ3, but the game has a definant edge on Civ2. Designing units, Social Engineering, and other customizable features are just too cool to forget! The only problem is lack of Scenarios/Modpacks. That isn't too big a deal, though.

modpacks is for those who cant play the game... and for civ 3 :-)

I think CIV3 is one step forward and two steps back compared to SMAC.
It is fantastic to be able to build your own units. 'ship'-spies to infiltrate coastal/sea cities.... great. 'Settlers' that can air-drop...wow:love:
And the atmosphere of SMAC....

I can't imagine SMAC ever dying. I play in the demo game at apolyton. There's heaps of people involved in it, some fanatically so.

There are many featues in SMAC I enjoy which are not available in Civ3, the games are so different. Each awesome in their own way. They are both my favourite game. lol

I would have played it, but it makes my screen go blue, after the (I don't know the english term used, so I mede a guess) 'This program has executed a "unlawful" action, and will be closed. Any work not saved will be lost.' Or something. I have no idea what makes this happen, please help me! I love SMAC so much! Sob sob..

Well, I do not know if you are using the same version of Windows as us in the USA, but I will assume it is at least similiar.

The first thing you need to do is try uninstalling then re-installing SMAC. Though I doubt it would work, that is always the first thing you should try. And patch the program to the latest version.

Next, if you have WindowsXP, try the compatibility feature. Right-click the icon for the program and (I am sorry, I am using Windows 2000 right now and cannot tell you exactly) find the tab that has the compatibility field and choose "Windows 95/98". Try the other choices as well just in case that doesn't work.

If that does not work, you need to dertermine if it is a driver failure. For people who do not know, a driver is a small program that allows computer programs to interact with hardware, the opperating system, etc. This can be found in the error message or the blue screen. The file name will most likly end in .dll, .drv, or .sys

Once that is determined try to figure out where this file works (i.e. does it control the sound card, video card, DirectX, etc) This is not an easy task, and there is no one way to find out. The best way is to do a search on the internet.

Once you discovered that, uninstall SMAC and try re-installing the component the file belongs to (video card drivers, updating DirectX, or whatnot)

If that does not work, the only real option you have is to create a dual-boot machine and play SMAC in another opertating system. I am not even going to go into that because it is so in depth, you should find a web page dedicated to that stuff and make sure you know what you are doing. And even then there is no garentee it will work.

this is a fun arse game.

Thanx for the tip, CrackedCrystal. I can probably get one of my nerdy pals to find out what the damaged file is called.

And, civ3 doesn't even reach alpha centauri to the knee!

I saw some people complaining about its graphics, but a norwegian gaming magazine actually gave its graphics 10-out-of-10!! I don't think its to bad either.. somehow I think smac's graphics are better than civ3's..

SMAC rules! Power to the genious of the SMAC players!!

EDIT: I fixed this 'bug' by changing resolution, so that the one in the gme matched the one in windows.

No problem Terje. I'm here to help

I've got three SMACX games running now. I'll probably be playing SMACX long after I've uninstalled CIVIII.

A friend got his for $2 at a going-out-of-business sale in a junk shop.

You coud do that in Civ2...

I play Civ3 all the time now but still have time for SMAC + SMACX...It has facets that make it better than CIV3 in alot of respects.

I don't why, but i like the "ora" of SMAC games alot more than Civ3. Maybe i like the idea of the human race moving on from the ethnic baggage of the Civ series.

Also it might the fact that its alot slicker....the talking datalinks are cool:scan: ....Slighty beside the point, the box design was alot better, along with the splash screen (an inspiring shot- glimpsing Planet- showing its awesome size and its place in the universe). SMAC has a wonderful sense of narrative.

They threw so many ideas into AC and it worked... I'm not gonna forget AC:D (its on my HD along with Civ3, Civ2 and Civ1!). My only regret was, i wished i had more time and a faster pc to play it!

uhhhh... what exactly is Alpha Centari?

I'm assuming that you're familiar with either CIV2 or CIV3. One way to win either game is launching a spaceship to Alpha Centauri (which is the star nearest our Solar System). The game, Alpha Centauri, is about what happens when that spaceship reaches its destination.
:D

I bought it a few weeks ago, haven't had much time to play it, but after my hospitalisation tomorrow I should have a whole week!
