Does Anyone Still Play This Game????

I'm assuming that you're familiar with either CIV2 or CIV3. One way to win either game is launching a spaceship to Alpha Centauri (which is the star nearest our Solar System). The game, Alpha Centauri, is about what happens when that spaceship reaches its destination.
:D
oh, ok I did not know that.:D

Most certanly I do! I love SMAC, I find it as good as Civ 2 though they are very different. In the beginning I liked Civ 3, the couple of first games were nice, but it lacks replayability as many have said. And even with the Conquests-expansion I still like Civ 2 and SMAC better. It feels a little bit like I bought Civ 3 and Conquests hoping that they once again might make a game as great as Civ 2 or SMAC. I've had SMAC since it came out on the market and I've been playing it since:D

Civ 3 don't have....
- Customisable units

I wonder why not....

I used to play Alpha Centauri a lot. After reading threads here for a few weeks, I want to install it again, and I still have all of my old saved games on a CD-RW, so....:p

I'm guilty of playing it quite often. One of my favorite games.

I'm quite the master of it now. I can go into the faction editor, make the other factions stronger, make my faction weaker, get a bad starting location on transcend level and still find a way to win the game. I am able to find ways to lose though :).

Did quite a bit of multiplayer in the past. Mostly with people I knew, I had a lot of friends who enjoyed playing it. Lost only once to some girl. She was really nice, talked sweet to me, had me fight her wars while she got a big tech lead and then she kicked my butt. Hard being a "male" sometimes, easy to get sucked into that stuff.

It amazes me how it still has some very obvious bugs, even after all them patches and such. They don't bother me to much though.

Very fun game. I'm not sure if I'll ever quit playing it. At most I take about a 6 month break from it and then I get that "smax" itch again.

SMAC is not my favorite Civ game, but still second. I must admit that I haven't played it for a year or so, but after entering this subforum I want to play again. And to all those people who say Civ3 lacks replayability, it's true! I've never finished a Civ3 game. But I've completed a few SMAC games (not as many as Civ2 games, but still). Sid Meier is a genius!

I love this game. I bought it for the PC (Windows) in 1999, then obtained a copy of the Loki Games version when I started using *BSD on the desktop. I've now recently acquired the Mac version for my new laptop.

Re: Civ3.... I never really got the hang of it. I still have the PC version somewhere; maybe I should dust it off. Civ2 and SMAC were my favourites, though. Maybe I'm just a sucker for those video clips.

I still play this quite a bit, as well as Civ. As well the excellent gameplay, the ideological faction system makes it rather more involving. It's hard to care about being next to France or Byzantium, but kicking Yang's face in and nuking Miriam repeatedly has its charms.

So does anyone still play this game?

me too :D. Can you read my thread about Fungus and tell me what you think? :)

Not at the moment but definetly sure that will be playing it shortly..."eternity lieas ahead..."

I go back to playing Alien Crossfire once every few months for a month or so. Its really a great game, but once I get the hang of it again, its just too easy. :)

I hardly play any games but SMAC.

Still better than all other games in all genres, imo...

Don't forget the game is moddable --I am working thorugh playing game mods now. There are many of them.

Even though SMAC is much better a game than Civ3, I haven't played SMAC in several weeks, and I've been playing Civ3 a lot since then. I imagine I'll go through another mad fling of nostalgia and play SMAC for several hours straight.

As I said in my other post in this thread, whenever I have to upgrade my comp, format the HD and such things, the first game I reinstall is SMAC. I had to format my HD recently and guess what?... SMAC was the first game I reinstalled. And started to play it again. :)
