Im getting back into AC, and im looking to buy alien crossfire online somewhere, since i only have the original, and i dont have broadband for downloading stuff :(

I found 'collectors edition' selling very cheaply on Amazon.co.uk, but there isnt much info about it. The box art looks exactly like the original. I dont know if this has alien crossfire included or not...

Legendary designer Sid Meier presents the next evolution in strategy games, with the most addictive, compelling gameplay yet in Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri. Explore your new home on an alien planet and uncover its myriad mysteries. You get right into the action by controlling one of 14 different factions, each with unique attributes and skills. As you explore this unfamiliar and harsh planet, you establish bases, research futuristic technologies and create specialised units to assist your conquest of seizing control of the planet. Mankind's future is in your hands.

The fact that it mentions '14' factions makes me think its got alien crossfire included. As does the given release date of 2001 (after crossfire, IIRC). But otherwise there's no mention of the expansion, so i wonder if this is a mistake.

Can anyone tell me if this includes the expansion?

I've seen the 'planetary pack' selling online, but only for truely ridiculous prices (more expensive than my 250 GB external HD!).

Thanks for any help :)

I don't know for certain, but to me this looks like SMAC vanilla (not SMAX).

I assume that this link is what you're referring to. The box cover is SMAC, the price is way lower than any copy of SMAX in recent years. It is true that part of the description refers to 14 factions, but there also is reference to only seven factions ("Players begin by assuming leadership of one of seven colony factions ...").

At the offered price, it might be worth the risk to order it. However, I really doubt this is SMAX.

But it mentions seven factions another place, and the box is SMAC, as already pointed out.

I, too, would put my money into this being vanilla SMAC.

Try a web search for "Alien Crossfire" +download. I found a website who has it on it, although they tell you, that you need the original game, which they dont offer for download (only the usual advice to get it on e-bay).
So it may be that SMAX is abandonware now, but not SMAC.

(I still have my original and occasionally play it...funny how some games can grow on you over the years, and most dont.)

Thanks for the advice. I own the orginial CD from years ago, but never got around to buying the expansion. I was hoping to see it reduced in price sometime... Guess i waited too long :(

I might risk buying it, as its only a few pounds. Then again, maybe not. I get the feeling the item description has been copied from planetary pack, thats where the '14' crept in.

Why would 'planetary pack' be selling for such ridiculous high prices (£90!) on the same site, while this is selling for as low as £2.50? If its not got crossfire, what makes it the 'collectors' edition? Maybe patched and with a start guide or something?

Confusing... And i can't find any info online about 'collectors edition', and nowhere to buy crossfire online for a reasonable price :(

Guess I'll have to hope that i see it in a shop corner some day!

@Vatras, im on 56K so i dont think i could download it, even if it was abandonware :(

I got a copy of SMAC from Amazon today (one of their sellers had it), so I can start another game finally on my new PC (I kept my old PC from 1997 because some of my lost games are on it still, but its technically outdated like a swordsman in 1950 and some dont have No-CD patches) :)
Sadly it was only the "Sold Out" label from EA, so no printed handbook or techtree in it. Maybe I can get a copy of Crossfire with both in it, with some patience...

One of my favorite oldies on that harddrive is Master of Magic...I wonder if someone is doing a remake some day...

(I lost my copy of it and Crossfire, when I moved four years ago, and I still mourn my handbooks.)
