Does gifting relieve you of maintenance?

My unit maintenance was too high, and I noticed the Greeks getting beat up by its neighbours, so I gifted it my most obsolete units. But my maintenance costs didn't go down. I even waited a few turns to see if it was a delayed reaction, but no. Do I have to keep maintaining those suckers? Or perhaps obsolete units don't count against maintenance so I gifted them for nothing?

Well it used to be that it only changed maintainence ever other unit, but I thought it got fixed in the patch.

If you gifted multiple units your costs should have gone down.

If you had population growth during those turns the maint reduction might well be nullified. If you delet a unit, your maint goes down. ;)

It definitely goes down when I give to city-states. I never tried giving to another civ though.
