I have noticed there are certain behavioural traits with the different AI nations.

Does it make ANY difference at all which one the human player chooses?

no those personality traits are just for the computer to use when playing them.

Actually it does..or can.
With civ placement, starting techs and cost of research.

Its rather complicated and I wouldn't worry about it too much.I'd link to the threads at Apolyton but they have gone and tryed to kill their forums with an "upgrade" and i can't figure it out ...yet

Maybe the game is playing you instead of the other way around!

as far as I know, the only effect that being one civ or another is that it affects your research in a small way. I.e. a militaristic civ gets a bonus when researching military advances; a peaceful one is penalized for researching military advances.

However, the difference is trivial. Don't worry about it.

Do the AI ass|u|me that you play with the same characteristics as the civ you chose? (e.g., if you play mongols do they assume you will be militaristic?) I always wondered if there was a benefit to picking a pacifist civ but playing militarily.

I assume (There's that word again!

) the AI just says "Human- I must form alliances and sneak attack them with my troops one at a time!" but never knew for sure.

Well, actually, the Romans/Russians/Celts often start with two settlers below Deity (more often than the others). I don't know why.

It has one differense. If you for instance pick the Vikings then you won't meet any other blue tribes such as the Germans. So if you don't like to meet the Vikings or Germans. Pick a blue tribe. And if you don't like to meet the Russians pick a withe tribe etc, etc.

Btw this si my post number 1500. So now I should be a fanatic.

Yes, it does matter. Because when I changed the behaior of all people to be rational/perfectionist/civilized we all begun with two settlers and 3-4 techs... I tried many times, and every time all civilizations begun with two settlers and many techs...

As far as I know, is does not matter which civilization you choose. As for extra settlers, it seems I always start with two settlers and 2-4 techs. Not that I'm complaining about that.

Who knows what civs are faster in research and stuff? I always play as the Romans, Chinese or Germans. They're my favorites.

I know it seem hard sometimes, but uh...
remember one thing:
through every dark night,
there's a bright day after that,
so no matter how hard it get, stick ya chest out
keep ya head up and handle it.

I noticed when playing the Aztecs that they started with two techs leading to monarchy. I had monarchy after just two more techs. So if you want to be a monarchy early (which is definitely a good thing in your early game), play the Aztecs....

Really, though, I don't worry all that much about it. I can catch up soon enough, even when I start with NO techs (which is usually the case).

The Americans are very apt to getting Monarchy pre-requisits.
Egypt is apt to get Masonry
There are some others.See Scouse Git's "A is for Alphabet" in the Great Library of Apolyton.

There is no civ that is actually faster at research. It does matter what color slot you pick, your power rating and your key civ as to whether you get research penalties.
In short,if you are going for space and are going to be supreme choose white..for OCC or small pathetic rated civs choose purple.

I always (almost) play the Greeks. Why? Simply because I don't want to meet them in the road

Nah it generally only matters to the computer and I think it pretty much has random personalities when it comes to players. Only advances and such are affected I feel.
Cheers Caesar 19.

I think the only difference is the start - you may get a certain initial advantage (two settlers, an extra advance, etc.) by choosing one or another color - but otherwise you are on your own.

One thing that it may effect - again, on the start - is where your initial settler is put. I may be totally off on this one, but I often find on the randomly-generated maps that certain colors seem more likely to plop my first settler down on an island or smaller continent than others. Could be my imagination, but has anyone else noticed this?

We can confirm that since we started playing the Sioux all the time,
we start out close to the poles a lot, at least that is how it seems to us.
This is becuase , from what we have read ,the purple civ is always the last
to be placed, as it is the last in the turn order.

I've never had 2 settlers, but then I always play the English. So much fun crushing the Americans.

Does this apply at all levels? Who gets 2?

(I've got the 2.42 patch)

Two settlers are not awards based on civ choice. That is bunk (untrue).

It depends on a series of factors, including starting location and difficulty level.

Try playing Deity. You will almost always get 2 setters. And when I phave the "opportunity" to play other levels, it is quite an adjustment for me to have to start without two settlers, LOL.

Oh, BTW... I just love playing the Americans and crushing (now let's see... what country do you hail from?)... the English. My my, how history repeats itself
