Does the AI know the state of your defenses?

I thought the AI didn't know the status or locations of my units until last night.

I was at war and the AI was pilliging my fishing boat locations and such (as they always do). Anyway, an AI galley pillaged one location and set off down my coast to get another fishing boat. After it set off and was out of line of sight, I moved a new fishing boat out of my coastal city. That galley turned and went right towards that fishing boat unit, even though it should not have known of it's existance. So my conclusion was the AI does have some knowledge of unit positions, thus the state of defenses, even though they are not supposed to.

What technalogical level was the AI at when they did it. If they had submarines they could see your unit positions or if they had spies. Although I don't think this applies because you said that they had galleys.
Maybe you overlooked another galley or unit that belonged to them that could see the location, or maybe they had a galley with the promotion that lets you see 2 spaces instead of 1 (I think it's called navigator).
Double check and see what they have got.

EDIT: 7/10/06
It's not navigator, it's sentry. Sorry I had my info wrong.
