Don't trade with a weak civ!?

Emperor game. I've been getting my techs by trading aggressively with the AI's throughout the game. The hitch: two turns before the Americans are destroyed, I signed a gpt deal with them. Suddenly, nobody will deal with me!! ("We know what you did to the Americans, Cambyses").

How am I supposed to get my techs now?

That honestly sounds like a diplomatic hickup. Even though you didn't - they somehow must view that you traded the tech and then destroyed them yourself. The AI reacts to GPT deals that are aborted to war like any other diplomatic 'backstabbing'. Not much you can do now, you're likely to be overrun technologically in a very short time.

I would consider such an event a bug. And thus warranting a reload of a backup save.

Yeah, you pretty much got screwed there. You basically "broke" the deal because you could not continue to pay them (due to the fact that they were destroyed). The AI blamed you because it basically blames you for any broken deals that occur btwn you and someone else (unless they declare war on you, or something).

I have no idea how you're gonna work that out. You might try saving up the money to pay for it... but that's easier said than done. going to war might be an option, if you have a fairly large empire. can't think of any other ways.

Actually, I'm almost certain that even worse situations happen. I was playing a game once where I traded the Romans GPT for Iron Working (I gave GPT, they gave IW). Three turns later they declared war - thus breaking the deal. A while later I was told "We remember what you did the the Romans." Since I don't recall a single other deal we ever made, and that was the only war we fought (since they died - Legionaries just aren't as good as Immortals - yes the Romans were silly enough to trade Iron Working to the Persians), I could only conclude that I took the rep hit from the broken deal despite the fact that they declared war. Only had it happen once, but...

I don't think that that was the case. I always love these kind of situations, because the other civ gets a rep hit. Did you destroy them by any chance

I've only ever seen it the once myself - my own conclusion is that it was a rare glitch. And yes, I did end up annihilating them (but I did not raze or abandon a single city, so that can't be the explanation).

Should've thought of that before you destroyed the Americans.

I didn't destroy them! Someone else did, but I still got a bad rep.

Anyway, I won that game by diplomatic victory after racing for fission and the U.N. :)

You can work around this strange programming by donating a city to the dying civ. You won't be a deal braker and the rescued civ will love you. Another vote for the UN.

I sometimes give away a tundra city this way, they are not much use anyway and you can protect the other civ at least untill the deal has ended.

This is a great tip. Thanks!

Small addition

Be sure you use 'I offer you this as a gift option' to donate a city and not the "what would you offer for' or any other option that involves payment. The ai will refuse any city it has to pay for even if it's just 1 gold.

Thx ProPain, I will try that...

Last addition : Be sure to donate a city out of reach of the civs that are at war with your dying civ. Otherwise they'll just conquer the city you just gave away and you'll end up a city less and a dealbraker after all.

Nice idea! You can always give them small, 1-shield-producing city on the outskirts of your empire. Then you can crush them and reclaim the city as soon as your deal expires. :)
