1st game at Emperor

Dd you sell Electronics to the Chinese? If so, then ... Ooops

Dd you sell Electronics to the Chinese?
I don't think so, but I may have sold them Atomic Theory. I'm not at home, so I can't check everyone's exact tech status at the moment (except that I have a slim lead with everyone else out of money). Will have to look into it when I get home.
If so, then ... Ooops
Yeah. That could be the fatal mistake this game, too. Thinking I should gear up to build Transports & Tanks to go invade China ASAP. Maybe America instead, since I have a stupid MPP with China and am currently at war with America (though it'll be over by the time I'm building Tanks).

Should I used my cash to speed-crank out units to go after Rome (or wait for Tanks to do so)? I feel like I should be using this gold for something other than bankrupting the other Civs (good a thing as that is to do).
How many turns till you can start building tanks?

In my opinion you should not spend the money on acquiring shields. If you need shields for military purposes you should use mobilization. This will soon increase the size of your military and unit support will help to slowly deplete your gold stockpile.

Hoover is not a big priority. Yes, choosing those 2 bonus techs makes sense because they are expensive. But coal plants are an acceptable interim solution. And saving the 3 gtp for the power plant does not seem to be a great concern for you right now.

Still, once the military situation is favourable, capturing Hoover or a city that can build Hoover is sensible. Any city with a tile in the fat cross that is adjacent to a river (and thus gets +1 commerce) can build a hydro power plant and therefore the Hooverdam. This condition may be met by more cities than you realize.

Say you continue 10 more turns of peace time, then 10 turns of war time mobilization at peace and then start the war. During war time mobilization your building options are limited. A few partial cash rushes of civil building that will complete before mobilization may be a wise investment. Details do matter, obviously. All in all i rather favour not spending cash in that phase of the game. Simply keeping it for later may be the best option. Waging war usually requires a large military. Gold is meant to maintain that military, not for building it. With tanks a less large military does suffice, so unless it takes more than say 20 turns till you can start building them waiting for them seems like a good option.

Thanks. Unfortunately, China (on another continent) just got Hoovers, and F3 keeps telling me my military is weak compared to China, so I'll probably abandon (at least for now) the idea of getting it and concentrate on Rome, which is still on my continent, once I get Tanks (still a few techs away).

Rome (who I could beat alone) got a MPP with China (who I probably can't beat), so I'm thinking of skipping ahead to a Diplomatic victory instead of Space Race. I'm likely to get the UN, which will make me one of three candidates for SecGen (China & America being the other two, they're both larger than I). If I get everyone else in a MA vs. one of them (if not both), would I be likely to get those votes? I'm still trying to figure out how the voting works.

(P.S.: finally traded for Amphibious and took out India's one-square island. That leaves a total of 10 civs including me.)

If you want a Diplo-vic, you need to get more than half the total votes.

So if 10 Civs are still on the board when you finish UN, you would need 6 votes to win (including your own), i.e. at least 5 other Civs ideally feeling Polite/Gracious towards you (Cautious Civs may vote for you, but may also abstain, or vote the 'wrong' way).

That (the bolded part) is the kind of thing that hadn't occurred to me. I still have over 10 turns (I forget exactly how many, not at home) to make nice with everyone. :D

Is there a way around it? Declare war, but donnot attack. Either sign a MPP with China before declaring war or sign a military alliance against Rome after declaring war.
Cool, that makes sense.

Question, though: I want to isolate China & America as my chief competitors so I can get everyone else to vote for me as SecGen of the UN. Would the above strategy damage that such that I should just go for the Spaceship, or not make a difference?

Didn't you say you had an an enormous cash-stash?

If I remember Bamspeedy's(?) article about AI attitude right, gifts worth 100 g make the AI's eyes light up for 10 turns. So making war might not even be needed...

Yeah, I have over 40K gold, something like that ... most I've ever had.

The gist of it is that it makes (nearly) no difference once the war is concluded.

Any declaration of war does however slightly deteriorate AI attitide towards you and AI attitude is decisive for a diplomatic victory. But just one declaration of war will hardly make a dent, so in my opinion it is safe.

The variant with the MPP however is more risky. "Never" a sign a MPP.

Won the Space Race, just barely ahead of China. Got the UN, but never tried a vote & didn't go to war again, notwithstanding building up for it. That felt good, at Emperor.

Anyway, next.

Awesome!

Just scrolled back through the thread, and I'm now wondering if this was actually your first win at this level? If so... double-awesome! :D
