That instead of getting more and more impressive graphics in Civ 5, they would have the courage to create a game that was as abstract as Civ 1 and had the integrity of Civ 1.

Everyone seems to want unbelievable graphics. But graphics are not what made the first Civ game keep you playing for days on an end for just one more turn.

And all of those "grand" graphics and loads of complicated/grandeose game plays is what I believe has ruined a truly great game.

Any thoughts?

Yes, I would like to see such a game.
IMO the more 'advanced' graphics are, the harder it is to figure out what's going on on the map. In civ1 you take 1 look at the game and immediately see the situation. In civ4 you have to move the mouse on the unit and zoom in to get the picture.
The will to play 'extented' version of civ1 makes me sometimes develop my own clone of civ but I haven't yet managed to produce anything playable.

I wish you or someone could. This first Civ game is so good and well worth not only preserving but having an extended version made.

Why has the world gone crazy over graphics at the expense of content, simplicity, and integrity?????

Thats because glitzy graphics sell.

I played Civ2, Civ3 and still go back to the original. Because its simple. Just wish I could add in some of the advances from Civ 2.

I first got CIV1 in the early '90s, later bought CIVNET and CIV2. No thanks. Pitched 'em both in the bin and went back to CIV1.

Nice graphics are just that, nice. Not important. And if they get in the way of playability, then they're a negative.

I like the simplicity of the CIV1 and the interface, though i would love a little more control over the game...

Some stuff on the CIV1 wishlist...
- the ability to give away tech advances (this way I can help the AI civs grow so they're bigger when I take them over!)
- a fix for the end-game pollution bug (thanks Sid, for telling me it's time to stop - what are you, my mother?)
- "stacking" units for movement (I think CIV2 had this, but buggy)
- quicker settler action times (so I can give up the settler cheat)

Oh well, maybe someday it'll get cloned, and supported by the open source community...

There's freeciv. Though it looks like Civ2 now, it once resembled the original. However, the ruleset was always drawn from 2. The best improvement, in my opinion, is sortable lists. Civ's "sort by essentially random internal data structure" model is about the worst they could have done.

Well there you go, once you let the open source community get their fangs into it, it gets all "modernized" hahaha.

Seriously though, there's maybe 150 of us CIV1 diehards here at the site, out of what? Several thousand members? Only a lunatic would code for this small of a group (no offense, Dack, as I love what you've done!) It really has to be "a labor of love"!!

Anyhoooo,

Is there a forum on here with a wishlist of features and bugfixes for CIV1 if anybody ever gets around to re-writing it? (haven't been thru all the forums yet, working my way back in time, but haven't found one so far)

While I like all sequels, what I like about Civ1 is not just graphic simplicity, but that it's not crammed with features as some of its sequels. No bunch of new units/tech/buildings like in Civ2, no bunch of new features like in Civ3/Civ4. Geesh... every new expansion for Civ4 changed how collateral damage works. Never got hang on vassal stuff either.

Civ1 is my favorite with Civ2 being second.
Some of you are right - complex graphics take away the pleasure of playing...
Well, Civ1 is WAY easier with Piramids - I just go Democracy and BUY 'EM ALL!!!
Civ2 is much harder but still very easy to play and FUN.
Civ3 is a Civ4's "unborn baby"...
Anyways, I really like 1 and 2 over 3 and 4. :D

I always liked Civ1, haven't got Civ2, but want it. I think that Civ1 is better in many aspects than 3 & 4. If the developers had used all the time spent on graphics for gameplay instead, they could create an excellent game. If I knew a lot about programming, etc... I'd make a clone. Maybe someday...

Loved civ1 because it was new and exciting... discussing with a friend between turns about what to do. I was 10.
Then Civ 2 at college, that I played so much.
Then civ 4 which I found to complicated and too... scripted almost.
Then I ran into civ3 and I liked it.
I think 3 is much much more a 'civ' game then 4. 4 is like playing a movie. I don't like it really, once you're on track you don't have much freedom to do other stuff. And the graphics. I don't mind graphics, but I think with graphics come complicated games. I don't like complicated games. Maybe that's your issue. You love civ 1, even if it had GREAT graphics and a lovely AI. It's the complexity that I don't like.

i am a great fan of civ1
was the first strategy game and it just has great option for developing and just an awesome graphic ;) You just see what you have to do and its kept real simple this way. tried other civs but never gave them a chance.
i always like games because of their gameplay, not because of graphics - so civ1 for president... or something like this :)

Hate to break up the Circle jerk people, but maybe you should give civ 5 a chance instead of sounding like a gathering of smug elitists. Video games are also about immersion not just perfectly balanced gameplay. I know some people are scared of progress, but really guys things change, so perhaps you should get used to the complexity and become the erstwhile civ 1 fans that firaxis meant for you to be.

Well, I have enjoyed civ3 and civ4 (still do very often) and little bit civ2 too .And propably will enjoy civ5 too someday. It doesn't mean that civ1 wouldn't be worth reversion/bugfix or whatever. Bah... you don't have clue what you are talking about... I think civ1 is more about immersion than balanced gameplay. Anyway all versions of civ are pure awesomeness. Let people play what they want.

Civ 1's graphics provide about as much immersion as an accountancy meeting.

It's easy to dismiss me as a troll that way you don't have to even bother responding to my arguments and you can continue to believe civ 1 is the holy grail itself. I wish I could practice that level of cognitive dissonance in real life.

What arguments? You're basically just name calling and hyping a game that hasn't been released yet.
