Just my opinion, which in my opinion, - matters!

If a download is posted such as the TAM modpack, then the download should be posted on this site. I don't really give a @#$! if the mod has five or six stars.
if the mod is posted the user shouldn't have to jump through a bunch of hoops, switch sites, fill out forms and then find out that you have to join some sleezy download site like FilePlanet,(which advertises free downloads), but they're not!!

If the author of a mod requires this, then CIV FANATICS should be allowed or have the decency to mention it.

Fall From Heaven is a 5-star mod, well worth the rating and readily and graciously available to download, but I wouldn't pay a penny to join a download website!!
To hell with TAM!!

Your voice with the same request would have been heard and respected if you pronounced your request properly.

You could do with some manners...

Manners be damned, Pale Rider is spot on. Whilst no one is forcing anyone to download these mods, expecting people to jump through these loops is rediculous. On several occasions I have given up trying to download some mods ether because the page timed out before giving me the link or because the download was rediculously slow (0.2 KB/s).

There is no reason to use these hosts either. CivFanatics and 3D Downloads are kind enough to provide us with all the mod hosting that we need. There is no need to use RapidShare, MegaUpload, FileFront, FileShack, FileGone, SaveFile or any other hosting service.

I highly agree, this is why I am trying my best to have all of my own mod components downloadable from my own site share on aracnet.com... No sign-ups needed, no annoying popups, etc.

Well, your ignorance is clearly visible by your highly disrespectful post. In the first post of the TAM thread, there is a link to a download for the mod, this is it:

http://www.jan.vandercrabben.name/tam/?page_id=2

When you click on that link, you are taken to a page with THREE download links. The first one is from Jan's own website, that's the DE mirror. This is a link to a file and thus an immediate download. The third one is a UK link, also a link to a file and an immediate download. Only the middle link to PlanetCivilization asks for a membership, the US link, but you don't have to choose this one, you have 2 other links to download from DIRECTLY.

Thamis of TAM has given a CHOICE, by allowing not 1, but three (3) different ways of downloading his TAM mod. And you condemn him for that? As a member of the TAM development team, I take your post (in which you go out of your way to badmouth TAM) seriously and offensively. Maybe it's better you don't download TAM.

The reason why we're linking to my website is that TAM is found on several forums, and is also linked to by many sites out of our control. By creating one single download site, we have it all in one spot and can make sure that everyone has the latest download link.

Let me also state that Planet Civilization does not require you to register. Simply scroll down and you'll find the non-subscriber download link, which is absolutely free and has NO WAITING TIME, quite unlike 3D Downloads, which asks you to wait for 6 minutes.

It really is the choice of the modder for how and where to post the mod. I also prefer things to have things downloadable from CivFanatics, and I think the creaters of TAM have gone out of their way to provide people with several choices. Your post was VERY disrespectful. :thumbdown

I highly value CivFanatics and the community here. I do wish there was some more coherent way of distributing mods, kinda like what I was used to with mod-sharing in Neverwinter Nights. Threads on a bulletin board is a very clunky way to post a mod. I would love for a community site to have the right kind of features for uploading/downloading mods, rather than forcing us to use a bulletin board thread to post our mods.

It's pretty silly to have to start a thread and "reserve" the first few posts. Big mods should have their own sub-spaces on the site with upload/doanload tools, feedback forums, etc.

I just can't refrain from mentioning this...

Planet Civilization offers just that: A mod listing with screenshot and file upload / download function. The CivFanatics forums are simply the best, and you can link to them from Planet Civ. The File Planet download also requires no registration, if you scroll down there are non-subscriber links with no registration required and no waiting time.

I'd like CivFanatics and Planet Civ to cross-promote the sites: CivFanatics for its forums, Planet Civ for its hosting & listing.

I'm especially fond of this page that Planet Civ uses...

http://www.fileplanet.com/subscribe/login_to_dl.aspx?f=0

:P

I don't know if there's a secret handshake to get files without having to subscribe, but the fact of the matter is I see a mod, I click the file to download it, it says doesn't start my download. If I'm a casual mod downloader, I'm probably already closing that site's window.

Not trying to be rude, but unless there's a way for the mod admin to turn off that screen, I'm just not seeing that as a great alternative.

How did you get to that page?

You click on the download link on Planet Civ, and you get to a page like this on FilePlanet:

http://www.fileplanet.com/hosteddl.aspx?/planetcivilization/fms/files/mods/59/civ4_terrain_civ1.zip

There you scroll down to the "Free Public Servers" headline, and click on one of the "Download Now" links beneath it. I agree that the free servers are not very prominent on that page, but that out of my control.

Just clicking on that link I get to the page asking for a subscription. Beforehand, I went to the page you showed (which, not to knock it, it's actually a pretty nice interface to possibly find a mod), then clicked on a mod. Just to check, I clicked on your Ancient Med. mod, found here:

http://planetcivilization.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=44

Then, I clicked on the v1.9 executable file. Brings up the subscribe.
