I have DSL connection problems. I get disconnected from the net quit often. Calling tech support and having them run a line test fixes the problem but only for a short amount of time. I have Windows XP, Verizon High Speed and a Westell VeraLink Model 327W. Any advice on what I should do?

I don't about the situation where you live, but I know at my home we get bad connection problems sometimes. In our case, this is simply due to the fact that the underground telephone cabling is oldish, and the telephone exchange is rather far away. Because of this combination we can only get 512kbps ADSL.

We actually, until a few days ago, were being disconnected from the net quite often too. My father changed the location of the ADSL Modem (also a wireless router) from sitting on top of the computer, to sitting on a table nearby. Since then, all previous connection problems have been eliminated, and we are rather confused (and happy!).

The problem could be your service provider (quite possible if others on the same ISP get similar problems), your in-house wiring (not much of a possibility), or something more obscure, like the position of your DSL Modem (I've no idea how this changes anything...).

Does anything happen just before the disconnection? In our case, it was always when someone rang the phone, or the phone was picked up to dial out that it would disconnect, and other times it was just random. This is despite us using an ADSL filter.

The reason that happened is because EMI from the computer was interfering with the modem. happens quite a bit actually. I use to do technical support for a DSL ISP and i would suggest that to people who were having connection problems, and of course, they think that despite i did the job for 5 years, i had no clue what i was talking about. so, when i said do it or we just sit here until the universe collapses in on its self, they did it and look at that, it fixed the problem! ergh! people are so GD STUPID!

so check for that. also, insure you have filters on all your phones (if needed, not all DSL services require them) another thing, make sure the cable going to the phone jack to the modem is less than 6 feet. that can cause issues as well. if all else fails, try the modem in a different unfiltered phone jack if possible, because it could also be crappy wiring in the jack.

I'm sure you know what you're talking about, all those solutions are definately worth trying. And yes, we had a hunch that it was electromagnetic interference (maybe from the power supply/power pack?), so it's good to see that confirmed by a more qualified person.
