Or strategery, as Bush would say.

I might be wrong about this, haven't done any extensive research, but a few times this tactic has come in handy.

The Early Game Aggression Tactic v1.0:

Presumptions:

1) The AI is not a complete cheater & trigger-happy (easy-medium levels, not when his production is 1,6 times higher)

2) 6 or more CIVS, preferably more on the same continent.

3) Avoid militaristic civs.

The Model:

During the first stages of the game, when exploring with your warrior or other sofisticated units, when you meet an AI - declare war, grab their worker and either run or, if you can hold them off, fortify thyself in a mountain or what-not.

Aftermath:

1) You got a worker (hurray!)
2) The AI will set it's production towards military, thus losing precious time to biuld settlers and improvements.
3) He will NOT amass a big enough force to overcome your small military, and will be gratefull to sign a peace treaty once he gets close to your cities (never figured why the AI tends to do this).
4) When signing the treaty, you can even demand (and get) techs from the AI, or even cities.

In addition:

1) You get additional points if you manage to destroy a unit with a settler, or even a city. Of course, this is not simple, but if you hit a goodyhut and now have two decent warriors, you'll probably grab a warrior proteced non-river-square non-capital city.

The trick?

No trick really, the AI will acknowledge the fact that he is not alone on the continent, and even though war could mean that you are biulding a few military units, thus refraining from exploration or citybiulding, other AI civs are not. They are seeking good city-sites, building improvements. The AI civ will want to get out of war as soon as possible.

Possible drawbacks:

1) You lose the first turn of war, you get no worker
2) He gets a pretty good army and kicks your @ss.
3) He will ask for your city in return for peace.
4) He will not like you in the future.

To avoid drawbacks:

1) Be smart!
2) Build untis!
3) Tell him to go spank himself.
4) Wipe them out!

End note:

Try this tactic, it will probably work in most cases. It should work pretty well on lower levels, sometimes on medium, but don't you go tryin this on emperor or deity, you will be spanked!

Any suggestions regarding this tactic are very welcome indeed.

its ok, not masterclass. although i think a better idea is to use miliaristic, build brracks and a few settlers, then just build archers with all cities with barracks. put one spearman per city, then go to your nearest civ and demolish him. as long as you dont pick on greece, you should gain cities and if you attack very early in the game, they should only have a few cities anyway, each with not many defenders.

visit nukezone.nu for an online, text based war game, it's strangly addictive and great for warmongers (not as much for builders, i'm afraid). PMme for more info.

please tell me more about this game.

using a warrior in early war to grab an enemy workers is an excellent strategy. it becomes alot harder after you go above monarch because the AI's additional units make them much less inclined to accept a peace offer. declaring war in the 1st 5-10 tunrs really reduces the AI's ability to build settlers.

this is a great strategy for the aztecs with 2 movement jags.

I, once played a game with the Iroquois, Aztec and Greece. Because I was looking for a military victory, I simply pounced on the first civ that I found. I was surprised at how easy it was to beat the Iroquois at that point. I was wiping out the Iroquois when I found the Aztec. They proved to be a bit more challenging but they lost to me.

When it came time for Greece, I'd already had my Legionaires and Horsemen to help kick Greece's butt. All of this was in Ancient time.

Yes, it seems that I used a similar tactic that is described here. Nailed a worker and declared war. Incidentally, I did spot a Spearman escorting a Settler and tried to stop them. Ack! This was on Chieftan level
