Earth Map

single player menu, scenario, "Earth". It's huge, though.

But don't bother. It is so huge that by 1800 you'll find yourself going to the bathroom, after hitting enter, coming back to find the turn still isn't processed yet.

There are three Earth scenarios that take place at different times but as Tavenier said don't do them.

Don't know for sure but it is quite huge. It also has some bugs and issues so it isn't to great.

Well I checked Rhye's thread and he said that this map is what he used for his map but added the 18 civ starting location. I can play it fine to the end game in modern era.

Wow, Good for you. I can't play the scenarios to the end cause my computer crashes despite I have a $4,000 three month old laptop and the special edition of the game!

Probably because it's a laptop.
I know, my laptop ha so little space, I cannot even add another drive, there's no place to squeeze a huge map into. But I have lots of space in my desktop machine; in fact most of the case is empty and both my HDs have plenty of room to spill over when a huge map hits modern times. But keep in mind that if you have extra fans, they can mess up old saves or delay the loading. I read somewhere that their sucking action makes the reloading go slower, so too many can cause problems.

I tried to play that game. issue was that simply starting this thing, my computer slowed to a total crawl...maybe a frame rate of 1 frame/10sec...got out of that as soon as I could...am I the only one?

I've played through Earth1000 - beat it in 2040 on Noble as the Chinese. They're resource happy, so your main concern with the Chinese is other nations - keep them off your back and you'll probably stomp the other civs. That one took me about 8.5 hours to play on normal, and there was slowdown near the end. But thats a memory bug which I've complained about before - I'm hoping the next patch will fix it as well as the bugs caused by the current patch.

I'm still a little puzzled whether or not theres just a loadable earth like in previous editions - you know, you just load the map and you're the American civilization in South Africa, and you're main rival are the West African Romans. So far, I havent figured out how to just load a map, and I'll be really ticked off if you cant. Seems like a pretty obvious feature to keep.

Have you considered buying a USB external hard drive for your laptop?

They are going for around 100-200$

I have played the Earth scenario through several times. In the beginning I used it is as a benchmark to see whether my skills were improving. I never had any bugs or unusual lag problems with it, and it's still one of my favorite games to play.

AFAIK, USB external drives eat a lot of CPU cycles. A Firewire one would be better. In fact many ext HD offer both types of connection.
