After I learned how to beat the computer on Deity Level, I tried to come up with more ways to make my game harder and more of a challenge. Here are some "House Rules" that I came up with.

I MUST build every wonder of the world myself.

I MUST not ever lose a city to the Barbarians.

I MUST not ever have a city captured by the AI.

I will not ever use Fundamentalism as a Gov't.

I MUST completely terraform Greenland.

Does anyone else have such rules that they play under?

Seems a little restrictive to me :) All that 'MUST' would mess with my strategy...

Instead...why don't you try sitting and doing nothing but hitting the spacebar until 1 AD, you know-give the AI a headstart ;) (They need it!)

Or just make a scenario where the AI starts with a developed bunch of cities/tech/etc. and you with nothing.

These 3 have been a part of my game for about 2 years. Similarly, I often give myself a terrible starting position (I prefer real world maps).

Hippo's Jesus start is another fine approach to making the game harder!

Seems a bit pointless to have to completely terraform Greenland though...:crazyeyes

I don't know, that is pretty funny. :D

One I like to do myself is to destroy a country in one turn without nukes. You need to keep a massive carrier fleet to bomb their cities into submission, along with a standing army of absurd proportions, but it is fun as hell. (I'm talking about a large civ, not a undeveloped one in the ancient ages.) I'm going to try the greenland thing though...I'll make it a nano-tech age paradise.
:goodjob:

All of your rules, but the last one, have been part of my games for years. Not so much as rules, just as a matter of the course of the game. :D

If you always terraform Greenland, then your playing on the Earth Map. Why? You'd be surprised at how much more interesting the game is when you actually have to explore it to know how the world is laid out.

I assume you are playing against seven civs? Try changing them to all ones that are aggressive expansionists. ;)

Try adding this to your list:

Never going to Communism
Maintain a 'spotless' Reputation for the entire game.
Don't build nukes.
Building all the wonders in one city.
Don't build air units.
Don't build SDI's.

These are criteria I typically follow in my games.

I also assume you know about the One City Challenge?

One challenge that can frustrate even the best players is to remain the entire game in despotism.

Earlier this year at Apolyton, there was a busy competition to win the game's default Rome scenario in the shortest time with each of the 7 civs. The Celts start in despotism, and nobody likes them, so getting out of despotism takes a long time. That made the game a real challenge, which spilled over into regular games...

It requires some extra patience to eke out a productive civ from the rampant corruption and waste. Rebuilding the palace is necessary if you expand or conquer too widely, sometimes several times! I normally win by conquest before 1750 or AC before 1900, but in despotism I'm lucky to keep up. If you want a challenge to your game, it's worth trying!

I play on other maps as well, I just thought that made Earth a bit tougher.

Always play with 7 civs unless it is a scenario.

What is the one City Challenge?

One City Challenge is when you play the entire game with only one city. There are variations of it, but, generally......

you can have only one city throughout the enitre game, no captured cities or anything.

The goal is to survive and build a spaceship to win to game (another variation is to conquer the world).

Use the search feature at the top of the forum page and search for OCC. There are plenty of threads that talk about it burried in the forum. :)

you shouldnt waste time trying to give the ai an advantage. the ai sucks and always will. if you want a challenge, PLAY MULTIPLAYER. cringe as your opponant builds every good wonder a turn before you, panic when large armies attack with thought out precision, wonder if your opponent is checking his intelligence about you, plot and scheme, etc. etc....

I got civ 2 multiplayer gold 2 years ago and havent played the AI since. there's no point. i already know what the ai will do before it knows itself. civ 2 MPG edition only cost me $18 two years ago and it may be cheaper now. i'm not sure, but i also think there are some downloads available to make regular civ2 into multiplayer.

When your ready for a real challenge, i'll take you on.

..with customization, challenges, scenarios and multiplay...you have a game for life.
Easy on the system reqs.
Easy to play.
Stable.
Challenging.
