Elite*?

After finally generating my first MGL, the unit that basically created him now has a star next to it. I was wondering: does this simply denote that the unit once created a leader or what?

That's true as long as you don't upgrade the unit. You could upgrade an elite* knight to a veteran cavalry and generate another leader from the cavalry.
