I have started playing the emperor level a few weeks ago and find the only way to survive is to kill everyone early with archers and swordsman. If I can do that before they get obsoleted then I win, if not I will then fall behind in tech so much than they will reach the industial era while I am still trapped in stone age. Is there a way to play emperor with a little bit of city building other than units and barracks?

I've just advanced from Emperor to Deity and have the same feeling about DEity.

On Emperor you should first try rapid expansion until bordered by AI. Plan this ahead, don't build that many units, choose city location on the criteria of how fast can they produce settlers.

After step one above you should be a little smaller or equal with the AI.

Step two: build units and cripple one AI. Settle his territory, Make peace. Use leader (if lucky) to build Great Library (if possible) or any good wonder.

t this point you should be in the top three civs. You can then play a builder game. You can research pretty good and use trading a lot (keep good relations with the AI). Don't start a war without 20 attack units. Don't fight wars all the time.

Last advice: READ CIVFANATICS, references: Game of the Month 9 Emeror level, succession games.

Good luck

You need to trade a lot more with them at this level, it could mean you set research at 0% and buy tech if you fall behind in research, it cost much less to buy tech then to research it, once you catch up, you can start your own research if you have a strong infrastructure ( many size 12 cites with bank,university...ect). If you need to buy tech from a.i., dont buy it to fast, buy it as a third or fourth owner, their price lower as there are more owner of that tech. Choose carefully from who you buy tech.

If you are caught in war, make an ally as soon as you can.

Usualy i win by conquest in industrial era ( german+panzer+bomber)

I'm doing okay on Emporer so far without fighting anyone. Early on, I only bought techs, but I kept one scientist so that I learned a tech every 40 turns. But I wouldn't have been able to keep up without the Great Library, the only wonder I was able to build. Now that it's gone, and I'm a republic with marketplaces and libraries in my important cities, I can almost keep up by myself. I haven't won Emporer yet, but is the best I've done.

I try to avoid wars before my GA comes about. That said, each civ plays differntly. their GA comes at different times and their ability to expand comes with a GA.

One consistent aspect I follow is being at war fairly constantly once I have my GA. Some civs you want to break the 20 turn peace treaty and other civs you dont want to break it. It depends on which civ your playing.

Also, start manually moving each worker and try to get a culatural building early in the game.
