II have to apologise to the team as I have gotten very lax in reporting my thinking in this game....so fair warning to all this may be a very long post.
First step is examine the diplomatic situation and note important dates and their consequences:
England: Peace Treaty expires in 1010 (1 turn). Are we positioned for warfare with England and do we want war with England? Nope, she has one city, no resources and is on an island. We don't have enough troops there anyway, and they are the wrong ones (elephants on an island with marsh between them and their target). So, make nice with Liz.
The Great Khan Temujin: Peace treaty expires in 1170AD (17 turns) and we have trade deals running for 1 and 5 turns respectively, in addition to the peace. So, Temujin is safe from our attentions, but since he is down to only seven cities we may not be safe from his, though Millie the MilAd says we are stong compared to Mongolia....
Ragnar Lodbrok of the Scandanavia is the other major player on the continent. We have until 1030 in ongoing deals with him for gold and silks...
Sapa Inca and Caesar Romae are the new faces on the screen and we haven't known either of them long enough to get in trouble.
The Inca appear to have become the Kultur Kong in this game, while Rome is both poor and ignorant.
Domestically we could stand some reorganization. Scroll throught the towns and do what is needed to boost the income stream wihtout sacrificing build speeds. Put Calcuta on short rations to put shields in the Copernicus bin and shift some soldiers around to get stronger garrisons in the south and some of the coastal towns. Barcelona is on the verge of a riot so it gets a bunch of taxmen until the market completes. Reorganize the central towns so Almora gets all the really productive tiles. By the time I am done gpt has grown by 14 and there are no towns on the verge of disorder.
Turn up the bunsen burners to get to MilTrad, though I am not real sure why, and after considering the situation shift to Physics as getting to Theory of Gravity and Magnetism is a higher priority than cavalry and the Military Academy.
Do a little fog gazing and discover what appears to be a sea lane to an island SW of Hastings so rush some caravels on the west coast at Bedeville and Hastings. Going to load them with elephants and do a little exploring, then after learning Physics put a rush on Navigation to have a map selling party (Tupperware for the inquiring mind) depending on everybody else's gold situation.
By the time my ten turns are done we will be broke again, but what's the money for?
After all that preparation push the go button and wait for the surprises to appear.
And despite all the care I took Sringar grows and riots.....
Mongols build the Sistine Chapel....Inca cascade to Copernicus'....so Calcutta builds AllIndia U., home of the Fighting Elephants, affectionately known as the Dumbos.
1010AD
The two settlers at Seville head to Bedeville to get on a boat and head for the island.
Reorganize the garrisons again to try and forestall riots in Bombay and along the east coast and move a jumbo from York to Hastings. Ragnar has too many galleys cruising our coasts for comfort.
In 1030 get boxed into a corner by Ragnar. The silks deal expires and to get him to be reasonable have to tear up the peace treaty and trade him incense and economics for his silks. He will pay us 93g+15gpt in the deal. The alternative was saltpeter straight across. Sorry Ragnar, buddy but you don't need cannons, muskets and cavalry. As a result income goes into the black and the fractious Indians remain quiescent.
Finish the Pentagon in 1030AD in Bombay.
My curiousity is piqued as Raqgnar moves spears and pikes into Mongol lands, not exactly a SoD.
In 1040 The Vikings start Smith's Trading in Rekjayvik.
In 1050 Inca learn Economics and start Smith's in Cuzco.
In 1070 finally meet the Byzantines in the far northwest of the map. Their capitol is Ancyra (pop2). Sell Physics to the Inca for a bunch of cash and gpt.
Just to satisfy my curiousity take a look inside Dublin: settler and six spears.
In 1080 a Scandanavian caravel with a knight and a settler beat us to the island. Looks like war with Scandanavia will come quicker than I thought.
In 1090 hit Ragnar with the leave or declare threat and his troops leave our land but we lose a settlement spot on the island to the town of Bodo.
In 1100 our failed settlers and elephant escorts set sail for Auckland. Ragnar withdraws his troops from our territory on our demand he leave.
Summary:
Well, we are not broke, but close. Lots of banks and markets came on line so income is creeping up. And we are making a big push towards the IA. We still don't have the economy to support a Republic with all the military we have lolling around in the south and the coruption down there is still hurting, swapping to Republic may help but our best bet may be to beeline to Communism once we can build factories. That will solve the unit support problem but still leave us with MP issues in the northern towns.
War with Ragnar is overdue but we still need his silks to keep our population happy. The disappearing temples created a real problem.
If we can build Smith's the economy will really improve....
Income on my watch grew 100gpt but expenses kept pace so our net position has not improved in terms of cash though our research generation certainly has.
As an alternative to building out we could go roaring through Scandanavia and Mongolia and get a Domination victory without leaving the continent....
