Emperor training grounds--I need training!

II have to apologise to the team as I have gotten very lax in reporting my thinking in this game....so fair warning to all this may be a very long post.

First step is examine the diplomatic situation and note important dates and their consequences:

England: Peace Treaty expires in 1010 (1 turn). Are we positioned for warfare with England and do we want war with England? Nope, she has one city, no resources and is on an island. We don't have enough troops there anyway, and they are the wrong ones (elephants on an island with marsh between them and their target). So, make nice with Liz.

The Great Khan Temujin: Peace treaty expires in 1170AD (17 turns) and we have trade deals running for 1 and 5 turns respectively, in addition to the peace. So, Temujin is safe from our attentions, but since he is down to only seven cities we may not be safe from his, though Millie the MilAd says we are stong compared to Mongolia....

Ragnar Lodbrok of the Scandanavia is the other major player on the continent. We have until 1030 in ongoing deals with him for gold and silks...

Sapa Inca and Caesar Romae are the new faces on the screen and we haven't known either of them long enough to get in trouble.

The Inca appear to have become the Kultur Kong in this game, while Rome is both poor and ignorant.

Domestically we could stand some reorganization. Scroll throught the towns and do what is needed to boost the income stream wihtout sacrificing build speeds. Put Calcuta on short rations to put shields in the Copernicus bin and shift some soldiers around to get stronger garrisons in the south and some of the coastal towns. Barcelona is on the verge of a riot so it gets a bunch of taxmen until the market completes. Reorganize the central towns so Almora gets all the really productive tiles. By the time I am done gpt has grown by 14 and there are no towns on the verge of disorder.

Turn up the bunsen burners to get to MilTrad, though I am not real sure why, and after considering the situation shift to Physics as getting to Theory of Gravity and Magnetism is a higher priority than cavalry and the Military Academy.

Do a little fog gazing and discover what appears to be a sea lane to an island SW of Hastings so rush some caravels on the west coast at Bedeville and Hastings. Going to load them with elephants and do a little exploring, then after learning Physics put a rush on Navigation to have a map selling party (Tupperware for the inquiring mind) depending on everybody else's gold situation.

By the time my ten turns are done we will be broke again, but what's the money for?

After all that preparation push the go button and wait for the surprises to appear.

And despite all the care I took Sringar grows and riots.....:gripe:

Mongols build the Sistine Chapel....Inca cascade to Copernicus'....so Calcutta builds AllIndia U., home of the Fighting Elephants, affectionately known as the Dumbos.

1010AD
The two settlers at Seville head to Bedeville to get on a boat and head for the island.
Reorganize the garrisons again to try and forestall riots in Bombay and along the east coast and move a jumbo from York to Hastings. Ragnar has too many galleys cruising our coasts for comfort.

In 1030 get boxed into a corner by Ragnar. The silks deal expires and to get him to be reasonable have to tear up the peace treaty and trade him incense and economics for his silks. He will pay us 93g+15gpt in the deal. The alternative was saltpeter straight across. Sorry Ragnar, buddy but you don't need cannons, muskets and cavalry. As a result income goes into the black and the fractious Indians remain quiescent.

Finish the Pentagon in 1030AD in Bombay.

My curiousity is piqued as Raqgnar moves spears and pikes into Mongol lands, not exactly a SoD.

In 1040 The Vikings start Smith's Trading in Rekjayvik.

In 1050 Inca learn Economics and start Smith's in Cuzco.

In 1070 finally meet the Byzantines in the far northwest of the map. Their capitol is Ancyra (pop2). Sell Physics to the Inca for a bunch of cash and gpt.

Just to satisfy my curiousity take a look inside Dublin: settler and six spears.

In 1080 a Scandanavian caravel with a knight and a settler beat us to the island. Looks like war with Scandanavia will come quicker than I thought.

In 1090 hit Ragnar with the leave or declare threat and his troops leave our land but we lose a settlement spot on the island to the town of Bodo.

In 1100 our failed settlers and elephant escorts set sail for Auckland. Ragnar withdraws his troops from our territory on our demand he leave.

Summary:
Well, we are not broke, but close. Lots of banks and markets came on line so income is creeping up. And we are making a big push towards the IA. We still don't have the economy to support a Republic with all the military we have lolling around in the south and the coruption down there is still hurting, swapping to Republic may help but our best bet may be to beeline to Communism once we can build factories. That will solve the unit support problem but still leave us with MP issues in the northern towns.

War with Ragnar is overdue but we still need his silks to keep our population happy. The disappearing temples created a real problem.

If we can build Smith's the economy will really improve....

Income on my watch grew 100gpt but expenses kept pace so our net position has not improved in terms of cash though our research generation certainly has.

As an alternative to building out we could go roaring through Scandanavia and Mongolia and get a Domination victory without leaving the continent....

Well, we seem to be in a good position. How about a screenie? I can't use the saves from here :(

Neil.

Okay, Scout, if you can pick this up in the next 24 hours, do so. Otherwise treat this as a 'got it' from me.

Neil.

Dangit... skipped again... (I travelled over the holiday... )

Your call eldar. I can play this tomorrow night, or you can pick it up.

Hmm... I've not really got to :hammer: much, so leave some Viking butt for me, wouldya? :)

Neil.

Got it... playing shortly...

Pre-flight check: We have a lot of 'builder builds' going on...

Mongols are paying us 1 gpt for peace... with 20 turns left on the deal. (?)

find a couple of stacks of fortified workers and wake them up. With all this jungle to chop (and railroads coming soon) we cannot afford to fortify workers at this stage guys.

Steam due in 7 at negative gpt...scroll through the cities, hire a few specialists..

Cash-rush the last 3 builds off the Cathedral in Ta-Tu for 108g. Swap Madurai from Wealth to Temple. Short rush with a worker build. Swap Reykjavik to Temple and rush it for 96g. Swap Salamanca to Aqueduct. Swap Odense to Temple, short rush w/ worker, set to starvation. Micromanaging gets us to +17gpt, Steam in 7,

We've got 2 cavalry armies... with 3 cavalry between them. (?) Wake a couple of War Elephants and move them southward. Spend a few gold upgrading them...

Let's see... We are at War with the Vikings, and our entire empire is producing one unit... a musketman in Bangalore (which I swap to cavalry)... spend 396g finishing the last 8 Turns off the University build in Guntur (our most productive city that's not making a wonder).

Bede should have warned you guys...handing me a SG with a pile of cash is like handing liquor and car keys to a teenager...

Press <Enter>

IBT - Vikings request an audience, and are rebuffed.
Ta-Tu Cathedral>Court
Barcelona Library>Barracks
Reykjavik Temple>Court
Guntur University>Cavalry
Manali Temple>Cavalry (mm for 10spt)
Aukland Walls>Worker
Almora University>Barracks

Turn 1 (1210) Whack a 'zerk and do some worker turns... found plarqton on the edge of some jungle. Dial up Rome and sell Caesar Banking for 27g, use the cash to finish rush the University in Madras. We're now broke. :D Dial up England and sell Education for a paltry 16g. Spend 15 of that upgrading another War Elephant. We're broke again. :D

Dial up Pachachuti and trade Incense, Gems, and Spices for Incan Wines. This ought to help the happiness situation a bit.

IBT - a 'zerk retreats one of our Cavalry. Some Viking units shuffle around some elephants on an island... where was that? Bombay finishes its library, peel off a worker.
Madras University>Cavalry
Harappa University>Cavalry
Birka flips to the Vikings. [pissed]
Inca start Newton's

Turn 2 (1220) Re-take Birka... move some Cavalry Armies into position to take a Viking city... swap Madras to settler...

IBT - Not a whole lot...

Turn 3 (1230) Put some captured viking towns on an "austerity tax"...(starving them)
Oslo falls to us, together with some horses.

Rush a harbor in Kazan (we need a cultural improvement there...)

Dial up Caesar and trade horses to Rome for 12g. ("Balance of Power" thing... Inca are powerful...)

IBT - a 'zerk shows his face...
Kazan Harbor>Temple
Santiago de Compost Pile finishes a bank, starts a worker

Turn 4 (1240) ...some worker turns... reorganize some troops...

IBT - not much :D

Turn 5 (1250) Aarhus falls to us this turn. move some stuff around.

IBT - a 'zerk kills one of our War Elephants.

Turn 6 (1255) Bergen falls to us this turn, along with 3 free Trebuchets and a half-dozen slaves. A killer spearman takes out 2 of our War Elephants at Boda. :shakehead:

IBT - Steam Power comes in, set research queue to Industrialization.
We build some stuff...

Our people want to build the Iron works! (which tells me we have coal. [dance]

:rotfl:
Now this is amusing...we can build the Iron Works at Kootanad... a crummy little town that Bede obviously designed as a specialist hole.

Turn 7 (1260) start some railroads...shuffle some troops.

Party time. Dial up Pachachuti and trade Magnetism for Ivory, WM, 290g+11gpt.

etg1-1270-MINIMAP.jpg

I spend 146g investigating Machu Picchu. Pachachuti will complete Newton's in 20 turns. Our build will complete in 17, and Macchu Pichu will cascade to Magellan's.

IBT - Viking Berserks capture Alesund. We must make them pay dearly for this atrocity.
London Market>Worker
Birka Temple>Court

Turn 8 (1265) ...skirmish with a couple of berserks...load a settler onto a galleon...

IBT - Oslo Temple>court

Turn 9 (1270) at the Siege of Hareid I discover that the Vikings have learned the secret of Gunpowder. Doesn't matter, I've got a stack of Trebuchets and a couple of War Elephant Armies outside Hareid. The city (and its silks) are ours now.

eldarborough founded.

Okay - I seem to remember the next better player wanting some slugfesting with the Vikings... so this looks like a good stopping point (with a couple of Cavalry Armies in striking distance of Trondheim).

I've got a settler/musket and some cav in some Galleons... try to take that island with the captured workers... and we'll need to get some cav over to that island where England's capitol is.

From the looks of the minimap, it appears Inca smacked the Byzantines around in the ancient ages.

We need more workers to build railroads. Peel some workers out of our large, productive cities between unit builds. Build lots and lots of cavalry, and try to position some for a follow-on war against the Mongols. We have 11 turns of peace left with Temujin.

Here's > > The Save < <.

Most cities ast size 12 will be able to produce a Worker in 1 turn, and either grow next turn (no loss of production) or in 4-5 turns max. The Workers will also be immediately where required to rail, in a stack of 6 they can easily replenish the lost shields from the Pop drop by railing a mined tile or two.

Neil.

@eldar: you got it right on the worker peels, the big towns will bounce back quickly - especially the ones with granaries... Many of the size 12 cities have full food bins, meaning the city will spend at most 1 turn at size 11. If the city is size 10 or 11, don't peel off the worker unless you can address whatever food problem the city has.

Another note on workers: there were some stacks of workers that were fortified when I got the game. If you must fortify some workers, leave one worker in the stack unfortified, so that it's easier for a following player to know where all the workers are.

@Bede: This empire looks like a good one for Communism, what do you think?

@scout, couldn't have said it better myself.

I've spent all day chasing after my wife's cat. Did you know it costs more than twice as much to transport a cat across the Atlantic than a human being? I'll play tomorrow, in other words....
