There is one thing I've been hoping for lately, but haven't gotten in Civ 1.. an epic battle or war which lasts throughout many, many turns.. and perhaps even constant aggression against several civs. (by an AI Civ, of course I could do that, I'd just like to see an AI civ do that..)

Most of the time, there are battles with just a few units, or around just one city, and once somebody gets a city, peace is always concluded between them. I want to see something where two civs just go at eah other pratically to the death.

Has anybody witnessed something like this in Civ? Also, does anybody have any ideas for trying to "set up" something to cause this? I'm thinking of:

Build a wall of units around the Japanese. Last time I did this, I was doing it for self-defense against the Japanese, and the Japanese responded with a wall of units of their own. I never attacked though, because I was playing as India and had the intention of making it through the game doing what Ghandi would do.. always be at peace. =P Any other ideas? Perhaps I should prepare tons of transport shops filled with military units, and land them all throughout a Mongolian-owned continent all in one turn? That might make things interesting... Mongols HATE it when I even come lose to a continent whih they own, and they are usually slow at building a navy, so my Transports should make it..

Mongols are a good opponent to fight long wars, whenever they started on a big continent themselves they usually are a strong opponent (at emperor). On any other levels my wars never take very long, the AI hardly ever builds enough cities to withstand my huge armies. ;)

I don't have Zulus in Civ SNES.. I have Japanese. I would assume they probably use the same AI though, because the Japanese are definately quite an annoying opponent. =P

I've had one of those (I was Babylon, defending against the French). The epic battle was also a late middle ages stand-off.

I had a southern continent to myself, (the arangement was almost like North and South America, but my northern coast was much longer, about 20 tiles, and the "panama canal" was about 3- 5 tiles wide), Anyway, I first noticed some French mustketmen moving southward, towards me. I happened to have some muskets of my own, and some cannons in the region. So, I sent those up to block the French advance. So, the French sent more muskets and cannons (A true Maginot Line if you will), and this line formed from one end of the continent, and nearly touched the other. About 3 tiles from the end, I had the upper hand with a few extra cannons. So, I started my attack, and about 80% of the French forces fell.

Hey, Mongols are never a threat, I played always against them, they always left me alone, and even though they had a mighty army, they always crushed the other civs. I didn't have the United Nations, though. Never figured out why. Maybe they feared me :)
On the other hand I hate Zulus, indeed. When I was playing my very first game, discovering turn based strategy (indeed when I was young I was all in action/arcade/driving games, until I was given a Macintosh+MacCiv), I was nuked by the Zulus. I had never forgiven them that. And if I have to destroy a civ, it shall always be theirs first. Nevertheless, I rarely genocide...
But concerning epic battles, I could remember once, I had an armada of 5 battleships and they had something like 10 cruisers. He he, guess who won. Okay, I also had a nuke and a sub somewhere hunting. Plus, it was cool to nuke them, since it didn't pollute ocean, and their boats were on the same square. When I showed 10 units destroyed, I was pretty happy. :D

And another time, I just settled for a new city, when they came around. Fortunately I had my railroad finished. It was a really pain during 5 turns, building armor in the nearby city (20+pop, armor in 1 turn) and sending them to defend my 1pop city. And... I kept it, although they launched against me all their cannons and musketeers...

Okay.. on this game I decided that I'd play as the Mongols. I chose 4 civs to compete against. I am on my own ontinent (which sucks, because I had already built a HUGE army of land forces when I discovered this..) and the Russians are on a continent of their own (I think) and the Japanese started on a continent with 2 other civs which they destroyed (Rome and France.) I am certain there is another civ somewhere, it had to have restarted, but I haven't found it yet.. although I have a good idea where to look (on a few tiny islands I haven't explored yet, or somewhere on the Japanese continent waiting to be killed, or on the northwestern part of the Russian continent.) The Russian continent is HUGE.. and the Japanese ontinent is even larger. I'd say those two ontinents combined take up a little more than 75% of the world.. the only other land masses is my continent and some islands.

I built A city on the Russian continent, and moved 80% of my forces there.. (I left some behind for protection against barbarians and the Japanese.. if they began building ships.) I explored the whole of the northern Russian continent.. no cities, but HORDES of Russian forces.. I was quite amazed.. I then marched south, and had to use triremes to get my forces past the Russians.. and the first city I came across was their capitol. ;D So I stationed most of my forces there, a few of them were completely circled by russians further north and I couldn't move them.. (funny.. only a few were out there, but most of the russian forces stayed way out there instead of coming to get me away from their capitol?) But they did surround my single city on their continent. I then used about 5 chariots to take a city with 2 phalanxes and 2 militias (with city wall and barracks) and finally took the city. They immediately made peace with me. Now that I have two cities on the continent, I plan to make some settlers and build a few more cities in strategic locations, and then have them all start producing attack units of whatever tehnology I will have at the time. Then I will clean the world of Russians, and then one I do that, I will take some time to re-build any losses, and focus on technology a bit. Then I will start my campaign against the Japanese.

The Japanese are HUGE and could probably wipe me out if they wanted to, but after my ampaigns in Russia hopefully this will change. Wish me luck.. ;D

I've had many an epic war in my time...Most of that is due to the fact that I have had the game since 1 month after it came out. I've played thousands of games since then and honestly there probably isn't a SINGLE thing that I have not seen in the game. Now obviously i might have never seen a certain combination of troop movements but that's like trying to touch every spot on earth, you'll always miss a spot!

Just keep playing, you'll see some.

The Russians are always a good civ to have a colossal war with. They start wars right after making peace, so you can be sure to have a long lasting fight with Stalin.

the biggest wars i've fought have been with the Russians and Zulus.

only ever been nuked once - and it was the Babylonians!!! It was very sneaky too...anyone else have this experience?:crazyeye:

I've been nuked by Mongols.. or Germans.. I think the city that launched the nuke was destroyed shortly after or something, because I could never find it whilst seeking revenge. =P They attacked my treasured city too.. it had the highest population I had ever reached at the time.. =[

interesting if it was the mongols! they have never amounted to much in the games i've played. It's usually the pesky Russians who aren the nastiest. And the Zulus too! But not Mongols...

Well, in this game (in Emperor mode) I'm playing as Japan (most likely will most of the time I play) and boy the other civs are aggressive this time! It is also interesting to note the change of civs' territory in this game. Hmm.. I think I might start recording that stuff by making screenshots of the world map.. anyway..

I start out on a continent whih is the largest continent. (Although it took me quite a while to realise that.) I first encountered Egypt, South of me. I was on a bump of land (well, I thought it was a bump, but it really wasn't thanks to an isthmus) whih was on the north side of the ontinent, so I had to go through Egypt. But, Egypt was destroyed. =] Later I encounter Britian to the west and Germany further to the South. I stayed at home for a while, concentrating on getting some city improvements and settlers, and later I go down south again and I discover that Britian no longer has any cities in the West, but now has a few cities to the South and to the East. Later I discover that to the east is unsettled territory, and the known continent doubles. Of course, I settle it all. This put me from puny civ to statistically weak civ which can kick butt. =D I attack Britian, and discover a single German city in the east (my east!) which is unprotected. Now I knew the Germans could kill me, and we have been at peace a LONG time, but I couldn't resist. =P Bad idea. =P I made peae with Britian, took another german city in the east which was created just before I declared war, took back Kyoto (whih was taken by Britian, and then taken by the Germans afterward) and also took anothre German city, within viewing range of their capitol. That's when it became tough. I had been using a vast army of Chariots for offense and Phalanxes for defense against a German army of cannons and Knights. Then when I got close to their capitol, I disovered they've got conscript.. =!P I cussed a few times, and tried to keep a strong front, but the Germans prevailed. I knew I was in trouble, so I quickly built a ship and put a settler on it, and sent it to an un-inhabitted island whih I had discovered a while ago. Luckilly it was still un-inhabited. I set up 4 cities on that island whilst the Germans took Kyoto back from me. We eventually stopped attacking each other, and were basially at peace although we had not signed a treaty. A while later we actually did sign a treaty. Then the Americans, Russians, and Aztecs decided to pay a visit to my island of last resort in case my empire fell. #### Americans. The Russians attacked, and eventually the Americans attacked. Then I discovered the Americans had also landed on MY half-continent and they took a city of mine, then they made peace. I was pissed off, but happy because a few turns before the Americans took my city, Britian and Germany delared war in one turn. I took two more British cities, and they are now reduced down to one known city. I took Kyoto back again, and I also took that city near their capitol back. Then they took that city back again (I think. I'll have to check.) I've also started another city on the last known un-inhabited island. I hope they won't find me there.. I like having at least one city of last resort in some obscure, desolate loation. =] I've only had to rely on one of these cities ONCE.

The Zulus are the most ferocious civ. No one builds more units, is more agressive, or is more competative then them. The Russians even don't hold a candle to them. But even they are a force to be reckoned with!

As for my epics wars, nothing short of true genocide will do...

One time I was the Americans playing on a customized world and the Babylonians nuked Washington. I loaded a few transports with nothing but diplos and sailed to the Bab's continent and saw nothing but giant cities and armors. First time I have ever seen a warlike Babylon in Civ 1.
