Era-based handicaps

Many people find that that the AI is strong early/mid game, but becomes weaker as the game goes on, as things become more complicated. So games often follow a similar pattern - the human plays defensively during the early game, before expanding mid game and opening up an unassailable lead during the late game.

I would like to see era-based handicaps, so that the AI can be given handicaps according to how well it plays that era, relative to the player. If the AI always falls behind in the Industrial era, it can be given a bonus in that era, perhaps at the cost of being weaker in the Medieval era.

AFAIK it's already in the game. ANd that kind of era-based bonus seem tricky to balance in every case : playing to find out that you can't possibly compete is far more frustrating than an early loss.
