era-less Technologies

I've set the era on a tech to None, given it to a civ as a starting tech, and it isn't working. It doesn't show up on the list of starting techs, and its effects dont show up - so its like the tech doesnt exist. Whats up with that ? Anyone know how to use era-less techs, the editor help says none era means it can be given as a starting tech, but it doesnt work.

Might be a stoopid question, but have you tried just giving them the tech as is?

I don't think you can start civ's with techs beyond the first era. At least I tried and wasn't able to, but I never removed it on the editor from a specific era.
