i had made a nice swedish civ by using the add buttom in the hacked editor and started civ3. everything looked good and it worked well. i begun to play and met the russians. after a while i wanted to contact them and went to the foreign advisor screen. then i got an error message and the game was shut down.

has anyone managed to add a civ succesfully? what do you think the problem is?

BTW Did you JUST add the new civ, or did you add/change anything else like governments, civ advances, units, etc?

I did 4 hours worth of tests. I got the original bic file, copied the americans, renamed them "Spain" with adj/noun of Spanish. Saved, and loaded a tiny map with the spanish. Both the spanish and I started on the same small island. I hit F4 (foreign advisor). Everything going good, I saw 3 ? faces. Then I talked to the spanish. We traded techs, then I tried to go back into foreign advisor. Game crashed.

I am sure that this Civilization related as I didn't change anything else. HOWEVER, I still have many tests left.

When you copied, did you tell your new civ to use the animations of the one you copied, or any other existing one? My next test will be to actually make duplicates of all the american-based files, rename them spanish*.*, and try again. Maybe since 2 techs are using the same animations the game gets confused.

I will get back after all my tests. I really want the spanish, but I dont want to overwrite any of the other civs.

aiight I found all the BS* files (Germany's files), copied them, and renamed them to PH* files. Then I went into the editor and changed Spain's forward and reverse filename's to Art\Flics\Ph_A01.flc and Art\Flics\Ph_A02.flc respectively.

Started new game. Foreign advisor works prefectly before meeting anyone. I then met the spanish. I went into negotiations with them and the VERY FIRST thing they told me was "; ROME = player's civ". Now this baffulled me. HOWEVER, after negotiations, my foreign advisor STILL WORKED!! The only bug I found was, instead of showing that guys face in the oval, there was no face, just a nice green background.

BTW all the other things in the negotiations were fine. It was just that starting sentence that was messed up.

I am determined to figure this out. I got another whole day to work on this.

If you find out anything else, lemme know. We can work together on this and eventually get it flawless.

There is yet one more file you have to change to be able to see the civ's face in the advisor panel. Art/Advisors/ (I think is the dir). This has all of the heads for the Diplomacy Advisor screen. Copy the appropriate file and change the name and you'll be able to see the faces.

OK I tried everything I could with no luck. One of the tests was:

I replaced the iroquois with the spanish. I also changed the forward and reverse filenames AND PediaIcons.txt files so that the German dudes face was to be used in the diplomacy instead of the iroquois. (Still with me?) So at this point, I was sure that if I was the spanish, and loaded the foreign advisor, I would see Mr. Bismark.

I loaded the game, created a new game as the spanish. First turn I went into the foreign advisor. My piture was NOT Mr. Bismark, but instead it was the iroquois guy, WHICH means that the part of PediaIcons.txt that declares foreign advisor pictures isn't used, WHICH would explain why the new civs keep crashing.

The game must have "which pics belong to which civs" hardcoded, and since we didnt hardcode our new civs in, the game doesnt know what to display, therefore it crashes.

You kinda understand? This is just what I am guessing with the data I got from my tests. If anyone has anything to add/change, lemme know. I really want to add new civs without replacing the old.
