Error while loading

I get this window when opening up CivIV. It appears after the 'loading XML' window finishes loading. I have no idea what could have triggered this to occur. What is the problem?

I was able to play Civ IV beforehand, so I don't think that the DirectX is the problem. Even so, where can I get it?

Try it on someone else's computer. If it works there, perhaps you're just cursed and Civ IV doesn't like your computer or maybe its registry. If not, then the disk is broken, and you'll have to buy a new one.
