Germans on Raging Barbs. Gives you some momentum, you have to pause less often to heal when hunting. If otherwise... Russia, because I tend to have lots of spare resources to sell.

French in this game is the best european civilization great unique ability and units...

France...partly due to their UA and both UU being very good, but also the part of most other european civs being kinda crappy (...england...)

Russia and ~maybe~ Rome are the only two even competitive with France

I am a fan of either the Germans or the English in particular.

I like that the Germans get that barbarian boost. I always seem to have more barbarians on me than sauerkraut on bratwurst. I find that it helps with building up a decent defense force in the start and I am able to hold myself off and provide assistance to city states.

I am a fan of England as well for map types with a lot of water because of Naval Bonuses. I like to explore, and England helps with with that.

Quick question do you mean best as in effective or best as in you favorite?
The most effective is probably the French my favorite is the Germans.

I have no idea why germany is so bad for all of you... free units, cheap units and then the panzer (which is average). The free maintenance is ok also and saves you some dough.

I'd tie them with rome for 2nd place.

Yeah, their UA is very strange and crappy.

Played last game as Germany, tried to get as many barbarians as I could to conquer somebody early, because usualy by the turn 100 there are very few barbarians left on standart map and seldom encampments late game provide some crap which you can easily buy or build. I got 8 brutes and couple of archers in like 50 turns, which isn't very scary.

May be they roxx with "Raging Barbarians" option? I think they should be able to "capture" land barbarians the way ottomans get naval ones - by placing their unit nearby. Presently you can't build a solid force like this.

Will try Immortal with raging barbarians - probably will be able to hold off other warmongering civs on Pangea...

I agree, Landschnekts are almost as cheap as warriors.

I played with France and they are very good, pre-steam engine culture bonus is nice and Foriegn legion is good for warmongers.
But I voted for Rome, cause I think they bonus for 25% production on building that already exist in capital is one of the best bonuses in the game and Legion unit is also strong addtion.
