I still have copies of Master of Magic, Master of Orion II, and Alpha Centauri installed on my machine. I used to play all three of these about the same amount as I played Civ II. But since Civ III came out, I have almost stopped playing the other three games. Why? Because the Civ III AI is so much better than the other games.

However, there is still much room for improvement. Improving the AI even more will make for a better game experience, and that's what I look for in deciding which game to play. It's much more fun to beat a good AI than a dumb one.

Indeed, AI improvment is highly desiarable.

Number 1 thing I'd like to see 'em get better at:

War! When attacking, at the moment they seem to send lots of troops to get one city, where instead they could be going for multiple attacks on several cities. And they need to make better use of attillery and bombers.
Like, where now they might send 10 archers to attack a city, they should instead send 5 to one city backed up with some catapults, and the same to another. So basically I want to see their war tatics improve. Saying all this, I did notice an improvment with conquests :)

As for defending, well they need to learn to upgrade their friggin troops more!
I should not be able to sweep over a civ with my Tanks because they still have spearmen as their city guards!

i agree. one thing that irks me is the fact that the a.i. never seems to need me like i need them. for example, when i trade luxuries with the a.i., the deal is always unfairly weighted toward them. as if their civilization has zero need for diversity in luxuries. additionally, the a.i. rarely if ever approaches me to trade for my resources. when the a.i. finally decides it does need something, like iron, for example, it is content to simply demand that i give them iron, rather than engaging in fruitful diplomacy.
