My apologies if this has already been discussed, but does anybody know if Civ 4 will have events, either random or triggered (like Paradox games)? If so, I'd buy the game in an instant.

If think it'd add a lot of flavor to the game. If they're not included, do you think they could be modded in? An example of what I'd like to do is if the civics labor option were set to slavery, random slave revolt events may happen in cities. Or, for example, if the civics economic option was set to free market, random boom and bust cycles could occur.

Any info? Thanks.

Non-random events of the sort you describe are in the game. Some random events are in the game, those being military battles, spawning of Great People, perhaps the (dis)appearance of resources, and possibly some AI behavior.

I sure as hell hope so. WHat ever happened to earthquakes and fires?...I miss those...

I have to say, Che, that those are the two events I am least looking forward to-as they are the most random. Give me Volcanoes, Secessions and a decent plague system and I will be happy, though ;)!

Check... check... check...

Volcanoes, civil war and plague planned for Adelaide. Ask and ye shallt receive. ;)

Should there be any time-triggered events in the epic game?
Great Leader - Christ 1 AD (or whatever)

Would a game that is slightly (slightly) more predictable give gamers (us) a chance to deepen their strategies?

Time-triggered events sound like a bad idea for the regular game. I'm guessing they're in there for scenarios.

You're probably right. I recognize that time-triggered events are a very slippery slope. On the other hand could not the epic game just be one big scenario?

I would like to see their inclusion in campaigns for sure - one RTS element that would be good to have. But, as has been said before, you can't perfectly re-create history in a Civ game, you are effectively re-writing it (in the game anyway!)

Yeah, what I'm talking about would just be for scenarios and mods.

Well, it's good to hear that at least modders will be able to mod events in. Guess I'd better put learning Python on my list of things to do.

In Civ 2, we could program random events. I had (still have, actually :) )scenarios where the terrain changed, due to volcanic eruptions. I either obliterated small islands, or turned an area into a lava flow. Also, I introduced land reclamation as a tech. Each of the original civs had a programmed event; where, upon discovering the tech, an area of ocean was turned into land. I had an inland area of grassland flood in one scenario. In another, I had the desert grow randomly. Then there was the continent that I had rip apart with a series of earthquakes, forming new narrow channels that eventually separated the landmass into 2 continents. The trouble then was, all the changed terrains had to be some sort of rectangular shape.

You could also program things like assassinations into Civ 2. Someone even made a sound file of someone getting stabbed, and the sound of footsteps running away. You could play the sound file with the message, "The Mongol leader was a victim of assassination. Chinese involvement suspected." Then the "Mongols declare war on Chinese" message displayed.

Yah, Civ 2 rocked! :goodjob: I hope Civ 4 brings back moddable events!

yes, the Civ2 event scripting was what make it so fun to mod. and when i heard Civ4 will support scripting i could only hope it would be flexible yet easy to script.

yeah the scripting ability in civ2 def. gave some really fun scenarios - helped keep them a bit more "historically" accurate, or at least helped preserve some sort of plot. i really hope that bring it back.

They are allowing Python scripting in Civ4. This will let you do what you want based on your Python skill.

Have the playtesters been testing events and scripting? Has anyone heard about this?
