I was going for a diplomatic victory. The remaining nations of the world are the Vikings (me,) Greece, England, and Portugal. Greece and I are the 2 who can be voted on. Portugal voted for me, I of course voted for me, Greece voted for himself, and England abstained because Greece and I reduced the English nation to one city on a tiny island.

Yet for some reason the vote is inconclusive. I have 2 votes, Greece has 1 vote, and 1 nation is abstained. You would think I would win by diplomacy but apparently not. I can win by conquest but it seems like too much of a bother to do so as everyone has infantry. I drastically reduced research after Fission due to going for the diplomatic victory so researching all I need for space victory seems like a chore too. I always turn off Domination so that victory condition is out.

Has anything like this ever happened to anyone? You know you can win but it just seems like too much of a bother to finish?

Actually I'm pretty sure if you destroy England - which would be easy if they have only one city like you mentioned - the next UN elections you are gonna be elected by 2x1.

The reason you didn't win is you need 3 votes when there are 4 civs yet in the game.

Quite frequently, actually. Once the game is "in the bag," I sometimes lose interest and just start a new one. There's not much challenge in waging war on 3 or 4 one-city empires when you own a continent and a half.

Normally I'll just play it out even if it is certain that I'll win, though sometimes I'll get a little lax in management of cities not building spaceship parts. I do give up on lost games, though I have on a couple occasions played them out, including one particularly memorable game in which I had my first :spear: experience--in the last of my cities!

Literally :spear:? Were you the spear or the tank? Either would be terrible, you still having spears when they had tanks, or you having tanks losing to a civ that attacks with spears

I do.

Once I know I will win one way or another, I quit. I'm much more the explorer type. I like starting a Civ and sending out Scouts. Once I build up to where I can no longer build, I pretty much lose interest.

Besides, by the time I get to things like Manufacturing Plants, Offshore Rigs, Research Facilities....the game is pretty much close to being done, and these builds serve me no purpose.

I have occasionally, but not that often, at least among serious games (I don't usually finish GOTMs if I don't finish them within the allotted time, even if I am likely to win). There is at least one serious game that comes to mind that I didn't finish, though. That was back in 2004 or so, maybe 2003, and I was playing America. Probably still Chieftain difficulty, maybe Warlord. I started near the equator on a random map, but without too much jungle, and progressed much better scientifically than I had previously - probably realized the value of libraries and universities. But by around 1716, I have Cavalry, and I believe railroads/ironclads (with Steam Power in Vanilla) and factories, and was able to pretty thoroughly trounce whoever I pleased. I didn't really fancy going out and conquering the world, and was happy with my empire as-is, so I left it there.

Compared to my previous memorable game, where as India where I slugged across a gigantic continent before turning to launch an amphibious invasion of Persia's island, it was big progress. In that game, I only had Infantry, Bombers, and maybe a few Tanks in 2050 AD.

Sadly those games were lost during a computer transfer, as I wasn't as regimented about backups in those days. But I still remember several of those first games of Civ III that often played out over weeks.

It depends. Generally, I set my opponents to include Aztec, Maya, and Inca, and normally before I quit playing, I make sure that the Aztecs, as a minimum are eliminated from the game. If I have not done that, I take the Space Ship victory, and keep playing until the Aztecs are exterminated.

I'm gonna regret to ask you that, but why do you want to always eliminate specifically the Aztecs?

50,000 human sacrifices a year seems to be a good reason in the real world. Mayan practiced considerable human sacrifice as well, Incas did not get into that a lot. Romans enjoyed watching large number of people dying for their entertainment and jollies. Incas I might conceivably try someday, the rest exterminate.

Edit Note: I do not play either Germany or Japan either, and in the WW2 Pacific War scenario, I take great pleasure in nuking Japan, and razing Japanese cities. If you wish to know why, I would suggest doing some reading on the Rape of Nanking, and assorted Japanese fun and games elsewhere.

I knew I would regret it.

Oh, boy...

Schadenfreude is a terrible thing...

Rather than getting into a political discussion here, I will email you some of the more "creative" ways that the Japanese made themselves disliked during the period 1931 to 1945.

You don't wanna go there, man.

Some people are messed up. It's not worthy, just let it go.

Trust me.

Anywho... I finish those games, as I enjoy invasions.

I always use tongs to work with hot coals when grilling, safer that way.

I couldn't care less about your clear lack of sanity, but you crossed the line now you ignorant racist.

Go spread your stupidity elsewhere.
