Evolution????

I agree that West End might have been a better choice than Broadway for the same effect.

Nitpicking...

"Broadway" perhaps should be "Theatre District" because it's a well known and more generic term, and most capitals have one often as famous as Broadway (eg the West End). Using the name "Broadway" does suggest there'd be only one of them.

"Hollywood" seems hard to argue against when even non-Californian films get called "Hollywood blockbusters" if they are expensive enough, even when they are made outside America.

Rock'n'roll certainly should be Pop Music (not that I prefer pop to rock, just that the 'Pop' standing for 'Popular' makes it more appropriate since it doesn't actually specify a specific style. Eg, terms like "Hindi Pop" have become part of the language)

Instead of Hollywood, why not have Bollywood? It's far bigger, producing more films and possbily reaching a larger audience.

Bollywood hasn't spread Indian culture everywhere on earth. That's the so very complicated difference.

The Civ team is very careful not to offend anyone. THis is why Mohammed (who was the leader of Arabia, but was removed in place of Saladin) was removed-Islam condemns images of Mohammed. They did not want to offend muslims.

This is also why religions are all equal. While religions, realistically,. would have different effects, they didn't want to piss anyone off.

I imagine it's the same here.

I agree that Broadway should be renamed West End, though. The West End musical theatre did start the whole thing off, after all, and Broadway was just America's way of emulating it. It should also be mentioned that legendary actor and comedian Charlie Chaplin started off in the West End.

As for Hollywood vs Bollywood. Bollywood is hasn't managed to spread Indian culture anywhere, except to other Indians around the world. Hollywood itself isn't merely an American cultural icon. It's a global cultural icon. It has popularized not only American films, but also French cinema with its introspective existential films, intelligent and emotional action movies (Leon, Ronin, any number of Luc Besson's films), Hong Kong action cinema, Japanese period drama, English comedy (Shaun of the Dead, The Full Monty, Monty Python), Eastern European films (Solaris, and the Russian film Night Watch is one that I can think of that's coming to cinemas soon), and so on.

I am not against evolution in any way, but I never liked the TOE as a wonder. Maybe a tech or something, but you can't exactly build a theory of evolution with raw materials. So, instead of the TOE wonder, I would prefer something else, such as a space elevator, or a Particle accelerator.

IIRC, the wonder was originally called "Darwin's Voyage" - the large expedition he made on the HMS Beagle that led him to develop his theory.

Outside the Indian communities, who watches Bollywood films?

Just for the record, I am a white English person. I and many of my white British friends watch Bollywood films and enjoy them.

Many others do as well, which explains how we are able to find Bollywood films in most video shops (excluding Blockbuster, which frankly only does about ten different films at a time anyway).

Another major point is that all the wonders except Rock & Roll are tangible things. It'd be hard to show a sped-up wonder construction movie of a book, whereas the Statue of Liberty, the Pyramids, etc. can be shown that way.

What do you expect? The game makers are American, therefore they will have a natural bias towards American culture.

While that is somewhat true, I'm getting tired of hearing it.

I did get Darwin once, rest assured he's in the game.
The theory of evolution is in the game (not a wonder, but as part of the slideshow (which is fully voice acted by Leonard Nemoy) introduction). This has nothing to do with "American Culture" I'd say.

Yes and considering that in the first three civilization games religion was portrayed as a way to placate your population and in civ4 its portrayed as a way to placate people AND cynically rake in lots and lots of cash, I really don't think the civ franchise has had a swing to religiosity :)

And he probably doesn't know either that the first car was built by Carl Benz in 1886 in Germany.
I do. It had 3 wheels, and looked like a carraige without a horse.

BTW, Welcome to CFC Hackmeat! [party]

Thank you!! I am not able to sleep right now and decided to jump on and see if I could pick up any good tips :) Hehehe

I don't want to start back into my game because then I will never get any sleep!

Any civilization with a Macdonalds within its borders gets a larger population. Not more people, just larger ones.

Ummm...I think you are confusing the Internet with world wide web.

You got me there! You are right, though many wouldn't know the difference.

I too watch Bollywood films as they are usually far more upbeat than 'USA! USA! chest beating Hollywood ones'

Though don't get me wrong, there are many thing I love about America and its culture!

This thread is without purpose. Its just more complaining and the complaints are without foundation.

Without foundation? why is that? Let me guess, are you American?

There is culture outside the borders of America, believe it or not! We are just making the point that maybe this should be reflected in an otherwise great looking game (of course I wouldn't know how it plays as is still 5 days away!)
