could someone post an example of the path that the shortcut must have to start the game directly

That works for me, but it depends on where you actually installed the game:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\2K Games\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4 Complete\Beyond the Sword\Civ4BeyondSword.exe" mod=\Caveman2Cosmos
