Exploit in Peace Treaties

I don't know if anyone else has had this experience, but I found a major bug/exploit when negociating peace.

When Japan offered me peace for $90, I didn't want to settle for that. I didn't exactly have him on the ropes, but I didn't want to end the war yet. So I decided to be rude.

I demanded all of his cities except for his capital, all of his techs, and that he convert. He did not accept this, of course, and was SUPPOSED to give a counter-offer. The surprising thing is that his counter-offer was EXACTLY the same as what I had demanded. So I got all 5 of his cities and all his techs.

Try this exploit if you're desperate. I'm sure they'll fix it in the first patch.

Can you repeat this with arbitrary demands in arbitrary situations? If it's not easily repeated, it's a bug, not an exploit.

In my current game, yes, it's been repeatable. Anytime the AI comes to you asking for peace, reject his initial offer. Next, try demanding all his cities and techs. Then, the game posts a message saying that during peace talks only one party can offer gifts, and that trades aren't allowed. But then, the AI will go on acting like its a trade, and will give you all that you ask for.

I have to finish this game before I try it on a new one.

This sounds like a serious issue...

Can you upload a save just before this happens?

I too can confirm this. In one of my first games this happened. I was offered to end the war, and like every civ game, I don't settle for peace without taking an opponents city. Depending on how well I'm doing and the size of my army, I can usually get one free city no problem, but this time the guy refused, so I asked him what would he like for peace and a city. I got an error message saying only certain items can be offered during peace talks, blah blah blah. But then the opponent offered his city and peace and of course I said "sure!". I figured it was a bug.

Then it happened again today. I was at war with montezuma and he demanded I pay him money for peace, I said forget it and counter offered he give me a city. Again he refused and I asked what we could do to ensure peace, and he offered the same thing I demanded. So I accepted again :) I feel kinda bad for exploiting this, but he was really getting on my nerves :p

I came here to see if anyone else had problems like this, and I had no idea it was so drastic! I never thought about demanding everything from them but this is a very serious exploit! I wonder how it passed QA?

Basically the AI tries to put items on the plate to make a deal, and the game engine denies it (for reasons explained in the popup). However the AI switches to "here's my deal" mode and away you go.

Note that you can only take items from the AI that they would theoretically trade for. So when I was at war with Russia in a mostly stalemate there was no way I'd get cities from them (not red, but I just didn't have anything valuable enough). In this case they don't make a counter offer and just reject it out of hand.

Haha, I found this too while I tried to make peace with Mansa Musu or something. He tried to reverse the offer but the offer was still the same and I "accepted".

lol

How did this get to the release anyways?

oh my!

i am bumping this as it sounds like a serious bug indeed!
has anyone posted this to the bug forum? i will bump it there too!

This IS the bug reports forum! ;)

Yeah, this is a definite issue.

I captured about 20 cities, loads of gold, loads of technologies in my last game doing this at noble. Most times fighting civs stronger than me, and sometimes who wouldn't even accept peace before I asked "what would it take for you to accept this?". Then I would just add their techs and cities 1 by 1 till they said "It can't be done", then I would accept.

It got to a stage where I would look forward to a war with a strong nation, If I could last the 10 turns till they would speak to me again, I would gain laods of cities, techs and gold.

Felt really guilty about it though, it is cheating after all - the sooner patched the better.

Thing is, it will work in MULTIPLAYER too, if the AI is controlling any of the other players .....

Bumping this because I discovered it too while trying to be "funny" with the computer. I don't want to be tempted by the knowledge of this exploit, I hope it gets fixed in the patch!

Also, and much more importantly, I've played in several multiplayer games where it appeared that this was abused by someone when one player left the game and the computer took over for them.

You can do it with techs or cities... I discovered this by chance. This is the biggest bug/exploit of the game! Please realease a patch urgently! There are other minor bugs I encountered, I will look through the forums and report them if they aren't already...

Haven't you programmers tested this game?!
