So, I am playing and have great gold amount due to the Owls society, but nothing to spend it on besides military and have a small civ. I'd like to spend on buildings, what I usually do, but my science is dragging and on marathon speed.

So, where can I send my gold? I don't need military, nor do I need settlers and builders. And I have no buildings to spend on...

Sorry for the post, was trying to do this quickly.

(…) but my science is dragging (…) nor do I need settlers (…)

Unless every inch of the map is settled, this strikes me as a contradiction. More cities, more science. If I have enough surplus Gold for a settler I can use somewhere, I will buy it. Usually it does not even have to be surplus Gold - there is hardly a better investement.

Buying great works can be a good use. You can target the ones you want (as opposed to when you steal them) and go for theming.

I know you say no settlers, but you can settle, use Reyna to buy a campus, and buy buildings there to speed up your science.

But yeah, great people can be a huge gold sink too and there are some really fun ones.

I'm serious on this...depending on what victory you are trying to achieve...buy tiles!

Sometimes your mind sees barriers, where there are none - I knew that a requirement for a National Park is that all of the 4 tiles have to belong to the same city, but I never realized that no one ever said they must be within the workable three rings...my intention was to place the NP directly northeast of Puel Mapu, but that game hinted my to a better location, which includes a tile in the "4th ring" of the city:

So why I'm posting this here? Well, this discovery lead me to thinking about a new tactic when going for a cultural victory - aggressive tile buying, when you have the Gold for it. Buying as many tiles as possible in the first three rings allows the city to claim tiles beyond - and those are the perfect spots for National Parks.

Seemingly in contradiction of playing marathon.
So a list of my learned friends above and a few of my own but settler is the no brainer normally.

settler?
Buying great works/artifacts
Builder
Tiles
Spies
Goodwill/joint war
GP

Of course some gold in the bank on marathon for quick troops can be beneficial or troll like but if you have tonnes of gold with nowhere to spend that sure is a sign of a lack of science.
Hoarding gold with no goal is a bit of an own goal.
