Hitler was born in Braunau-am-Inn in Austria, actually.

Other famous Germans:

Karl Benz - Creator of the worlds first petrol driven motor engine.
Georg Friedrich Handel - Composer (although he later was a British citizen).

I am outraged that no one has yet named one man, who added at least 2 years onto WWII (in my mind anyway)

ERWIN ROMMEL!!!!

Your outraged?

I'm still mystified Adolf Galland has been skipped!

Famous for the 'Channel Dash', test flew the Me-262 and bio 'First and the Last'; and led the fighter revolt . Became the general of fighters, he was a flying general before Yeager ever was. :)

Was the successor of another fammous german Ernst Udet (who suicided shortly before the death of Werner Molders, another famous german).

Vics 104 and veteran of the spanish civil war.

He also fudged his eye test after a glider accident. :)

Another amusing fact, Adolf Galland trained the Argentine Airforce, who used his tactics and training some 30 years later in the Falklands.

And how can you mention the Red Baron, without mentioning his Mentor? Oswald Boelke, the man who rote the rules of air combat!

Agreed on all so far.

I think someone had mentioned Rommel on the first page.

Nobody has mentioned Hinderburg, Ludendorff or Junkers.

How about Anthony Fokker (Or was he Dutch?)?

Dirk Nowitski is a pretty good German basketball player these days.

Roentgen discovered the X-Ray.

The Scorpions had some hits in the 80's and remain a pretty good rock band.

Heidi Klum and Claudia Schiffer both are pretty nice looking ladies. In fact German women have the world beat in the looks department:D. And some of them are smart too! (Put in for Mrs. Fox, who is looking over my shoulder and happens to be a Bavarian Girl):)

Galland was a great tactician in the air, and was forbidden to fly for most of WWII due to his "morale boosting" presence. But he still did fly though, and got a few kills while "grounded".

And Eric snubbed Adolf for JG 52! :)

Yep Fokker was Ducth, how about Willy Messerschimdt!

I can't remember the names of other Luftwaffe designers or the night aces. There were two stand out luftwaffe night aces, all I remember is the highest ranking night ace had 121 vics.

Oh how about Otto Skorzeny (Organized the El-Duche rescue), but was he Bavarian or Austrian? I can't remember.

Friedrich von Schiller, the guy who wrote the William Tell Story, which is used by many countries throughout the world.

edit: and two more:
Heinrich Hertz - proved that electric waves travel through air
Kirchhoff - Author of the Laws of Kirchhoff

Some more, off the top of my noggin:

Marlene Dietrich (actress)

Leni Riefenstahl (director)

Wasn't Thomas Mann German? And wasn't his brother Heinrich? They are both well regarded writers.

Albrecht Durer (artist)

Bertolt Brecht (playwright)

oh gosh how could I forget Roland Emmerich - Producer

Why do you say he's not German?
You can say can say he was a Jewish-German or a Jewish Austrian, which makes him an ethnic German. He certainly wasn't a Czech.

Here are some more:

  • Otto von Guericke - edited (does someone care? ;))

General Friedrich Wilhem Baron von Steuben - served under Frederick the Great in Prussia and after meeting Benjamin Franklin he went to America to form the army of George Washington to a credible military force. Without him the outcome of the independance war would probably be reversed! :p

Werner von Siemens - important engineer with discoveries in the field of electricity

Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz - important mathematician, inventor of integral and differential calculus (disputed), first ideas of calculation machines (computer)

Catherine II, the Great - Russian Czar, born in Zerbst

Emperor Otto I. - instituted the 1st Holy Roman Empire

Johann Sebastian Bach - famous classical composer (Civ2 music)

many more musicians and artists not already listed

And several others, too.
:D

What about Colonel Klink and Sergent Shultz? ;)

Sorry, I had too. :)

What about Offenbach, Ralf Schumacher and of course Heino!

For all of you asking who the four stars is Heino: A website devoted to him! - rather terrifying really but if you've ever lived in Germany or even known a German for a decent period of time you must have heard of Heino. According to that website, 98% of Germans know who he is compared to 99% for Helmut Kohl. That shows the age of the site and the remarkable intelligence and politician recognition skills of German under 5s.

[edit]: from above - Herr Flick! The idol of Mr Darkshade surely deserves a mention, although not of the war.
