I've been away from the GOTM for quite a while...bad health...but has anyone tried the "Fast Win" theory with the GOTM games? Its not a new theory but I only recently discovered it. Here's the site...

How to Win Civ2 Before 1750 AD
Written by Lars Palsberg and Jens Palsberg (palsberg@ucla.edu), August 2006

That's a fairly outdated theory. In my opinion, this has been far surpassed by the work of Grigor and Peaster, two of the most prolific early conquest players. These guys win way before 1750 AD. Peaster is really the guy to talk to on the strategy, but the short version is - HEAVY ICS growth early game, Marco Polo's embassy to trade maps, Lighthouse so triremes can carry your units everywhere, and Hanging gardens to keep your cities happy at size two via that black hat quirk. Vet elephants and crusaders to crush everything. I've never really played that way. Peaster - did I get anything wrong?

I concur with Banach. I read their theory when they first posted it and my immediate reaction was Peaster beats them by leaps and bounds. They must have developed it in isolation, before discovering CFC and Apolyton, because near the end they mention that they have been unable to consistently beat the +1750 mark. Had they visited these forums they would have seen examples of people, like Peaster, consistentely beating such mark.

Well, like I said...I've been away for a while. When I was looking at the Civ II forums, the War Academy, to refresh my skills and knowledge I found these references...

The Strategy & Tips forum has lots of great tips not mentioned in the Academy. So be sure to check it out!

After Palsberg's line was the flashing little banner of "New" so I thought it was. I saw the date but it seems like little else had been added. I will look for your suggestions on the forums. Are the ideas listed on any one site for completeness?

Banach and Ali are right. To get a green star for the fastest finish in a GOTM, you normally have to finish before 500AD - sometimes before 1AD.

No offense intended to anyone, but the CFC Civ2 War Academy contains a fairly odd assortment of mostly outdated articles. The articles in the Great Library (a forum at the Apolyton site) are generally excellent. I think there's also a sticky post in the strategy forum here that has many good links.

The outdated info in the War Academy is why I made the sticky thread. At least I finally got TF to update some of the key incorrect info there, but it's still no where near 'current' to what players can do today with the game.
