I want to get the game as soon as possible after release. Preferrable a cd-version though, not a downloaded software version.
I live in Sweden. Any ideas from where I should order the game for fast shipping? Amazon.uk?

If you get it on Steam, you can usually download it the night before it's officially released, then have it up and running the second it's legitimately out.

Since you seem to have already rejected that option, I'd guess that all the major retailers will have it there reasonably quickly, and I doubt that there's any real difference in speed between them.

It will be on a DVD, not a cd, just so you know.

If you don't mind paying through the nose, the fastest way would be to order from a US retailer that ships overseas and pay for the fastest shipping mode possible.
That's really nonsense. Go to a local webshop.

In Sweden there are several websites that sell it. See the pre-order thread. There are also links to various websites in other countries that sell the game. Of course there are also plenty of retail shops that'll have the game for you on 24 September.

Except if he orders from the US, some retailers will ship on 20 November, and if he gets two-day international air mail, it will be there 2 days before it comes out in his country.

I once ordered some software from calfornia at 1pm GMT. By 2pm it was in the air. Was in london at 5am and was with me at 9am. I couldn't believe how quickly they got it to me. :goodjob:

Steam lets you burn the download to DVD (I think!, Not sure to be honest, I think others have verified this is possible...?)... so digital download could still be an option if you are willing to do that.
yeah you can backup the data you downloaded. You can make your own dvd that way. It still requires steam to run of course. I never did this but others confirmed that it can be done.

There is no point trying to get the game before European release date (24th September) because Steam won't let you install or activate it before that date. Just get it from local store or Swedish webshop. While British stores are usually a bit cheaper you usually have to wait the game couple more days.

PLay.com typically ships the game so that you have it at or slightly before the release date. With a game that requires online registration this may not help that much, but with games that you can install and play it is very nice to have the game a few days in advance. :)

Hopefully Valve anticipates the Civ 5 release date, and makes available a whole horde more of bandwidth so everyone can have no problems playing it the day the buy it!

Given their past history on this matter, I have my doubts. Though, I bet Civ 5 won't be as popular as l4d2 was. That was a nightmare getting down. Maybe they've learnt from their past mistakes!

But yes, games can be downloaded 24-48 hours in advance, then be activated when they are actually available.

decrypting requires a lot less bandwidth than downloading, so installing from the disc should grant some quite significant benefits there. I installed Empire Total War from the disc on the release day, and I experienced no trouble that way.
