Just got this game and I'm liking it a lot - but the forum seems rather asleep. Thought I'd see if the first poll in at least 21 months could breathe some life into it - while indicating whom I should play as next.

I played the Altarians my first game at the Normal difficulty level, and was able to pull of a domination/cultural victory. The Altarians seemed to suit my technological style well, and Civ experience certainly paid off. Much better results than my first Cheiftan Civ game!

There isn't much discussion on GalCiv 2 here since they already have their own vast and very active forum :)

Lately my favourite has become the Korath Clan; in the beginning I often went for a research/economy society, usually ending in a technology victory.
After participating in some Metaverse competitions I discovered the joy of influence victories and stealing AI planets.
A while ago I tried the Korath for the first time and it completely changes the game for me, pushes me towards a much more military and aggressive stance. And sneaking in a spore ship wiping out an entire planet is sooo nice :)

I make my own, which are basically Terrans anyway.

Custom Civilization. It is basically an effort to maximize economic production until I can get about 6 planets in my fold. Then I fall back on getting some lucky Rangers and Corvettes so I don't spend my money on military production.

I always choose custom, but out of the default races, I like the Terrans, Arceans, Drengin, Yor, Torians, Iconians, Korath, and Krynn. I'm not a big fan of the others, and here's why:

Korx - Ugly as hell...
Thalans - Also ugly, and their ship colours are disgusting
Altarians - Too boring now, and the new female leaderhead has bizarre lips. Netro mancer was better.

I'm 50:50 about the Drath.

I don't play the original races much though. I might after TA is out, so they have unique tech trees.

Indeed the unique tech trees from TA change a hell of a lot, makes the civilizations much more distinguished and much more suited to a certain style of playing.

I like the Krynn the least.

I voted Iconian refuge, but I play mostly a custom race

Yor. I love miniaturization bonuses. More lazerz for my shipz.

I rather like to play with the Korx. Why? Well, I wish I could give a great reason, but the true reason is:

MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY

MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY

Tried to play with the Yor once, was poorer than a beggar.

Terrans are awesome, diplo bonuses are great when well-used. Buying world-bending technologies for a penny and pretty much being like a god to the aliens is worth it.

I never knew that CFC had a GalCiv 2 forum. Oh well, I play as a custom race known as the BORG. :borg::assimilate::borg:

Yor for Galactic Domination, either through war, production, or accention.
Fallowed by Thalans, then Terrans.

Custom civilization known as the Mathalamus Republic on a modified homeworld.

Has to be the Krynn, for their unorthodox approach to cultural takeover, and generally accessible tech tree with nice faction bonuses.

Terrans are good, but too familiar. The Thalan are interesting, but with default settings look a bit too tie-dyed for my tastes. I don't understand the love for the Yor at the moment - their economy's a bit slow to build and their approach to victory is less than versatile.
