I won't make this a poll because there's just too many options, but I am curious to know which map types you prefer? I always play on fractal maps, but may want to try some others and am looking for suggestions. I do not like the Pangea maps because I think it negates a big part of the techs (naval, etc). And also, what exactly is different about the fantasy map as opposed to the others?

I always play fractal, usually the ffh version. I do often check the map before really starting to play, because on occasions I get a crappy map with fractal.. but that doesn't happen often.

I can't bring myself to check a map before the game starts. To me, that takes away all of the fun of exploring. I usually prefer a start where it's myself and 1 other civ on a smallish continent, but I try to play any start I get.

While you may not like them I love pangea. I have nothing against naval stuff but I occasionally find myself stuck alone on an island and that is just no fun. Further the naval aspect is still important so that the enemy doesn't drop a bunch of calvery units on your fairly unprotected shore.

Fractal is the way I go if I wanted the naval exploration feel. I have seen too many continents maps where the civs on the larger continent end up being the dominant civs in the game by the time first contact is made. I guess it might have to do a lot with trading techs and maybe trade routes. Fractal maps seem a little more evenly distributed in my experience.

Terra Maps are fun too if you like fighting barbarians to victory. It was always fun to see my heavy crossbowman with drill line take out 30 units(no exageration) and take only moderate damage after getting dropped off. I hope the hell stuff in fire is like that but with more powerful units. The AI can't seem to handle the barbarians though and until I have taken a big chunk out of them the computers colonies don't seem to last long so it's pretty much you against the barbarians.

I like the terra map best. The continents doesn't have enough small to medium islands. Fractals is okay. I like having the late game adventuring with terra (especially nice with the tower of mastery victory). FFH_Fractals is fun too.

I love highlands. Gives everything a real fantasy feel. Plus all the mountains make for interesting tactical decisions.

I think someone needs to rework the "Fantasymap" aspect of Smart map.

Its...well, its just wrong.
Anyone like it?

What does smart map do with fantasy map? I've seen fantasy w/o smart map, struck me as pretty much just a novelty.

I like Terra best, though it can get a little big.

Well, when i saw my starting location and the bizzarities of everything, i said screw it, and stoped playing.

Basically, forests on desert spaces, and ice spaces.

Jungle On tundra. Just a lot of bizzare things.

the tectonics one someone made is a lot of fun (drieche2 has a flavour version in his thread), since it offers a variety of map types, and includes decent mountain chains allowing for a lot of tactical fun (which is kinda ruined once uber rangers come into the picture.. which happens while i still have axemen unless i go the ranger route as well)

I still think that the addition of More Terrain Features that limit expansion and add depth to the world would go a far way into creating a sense of fantasy.

ALSO, I still think that each civ should likely start out in their sterotypical locations. Elves in Forests, Dwarves in Hills, Seapeoples near the See, Doviello in ice, Malakim in Desert, etc. Preferably the Hippus would also start in open planes.

We pick our civs, but for flavor, really, our civs should be based on locational circumstance. Each "culture" grows from necessity and adaptation to their locations. Were kind of cheating by picking "where we come from" and "who we are" - which is not how things typically develop, but if we could preserve the illusion of development - then it'd be a sweet deal to see things play out accordingly.

You have seen drieche2's Ffh maps, right? That's exactly what he does.

Youshotwhointhawhatnow?

There are? Why havnt I seen them. More importantly, why hasn't someone from the development team or Drieche2 himself personally shown up at my house, which i have not provided the information for, and given them to me on a silver platter lined lemons and poppyseed muffins??!

I guess im hopeful that something will be folded into the actual FfH releases...currently, im running low on diskspace...(Ask not questions you wish to not know answers of)

You remind me of the creatures on the discovery channel they talk about come to their point of extinction, because they couldnt learn, or adapt.
