I've tried quite a few mods and always go back to History In the Making. It has added stuff without all the kitchen sink stuff. They didn't mess with new civics, but added new units and techs and civs. You don't automatically see many resocurces, you must discover the tech to see them.
Hands down the best mod out there, I highly highly recommend it!
