POLITICIANS in Las Vegas have made it a crime to feed the homeless in the city's parks.

Under the law, which comes into effect today, anyone offering sustenance to "the indigent" will be acting illegally and risk a $1300 fine and six months' jail.
Several other US cities have adopted, or considered, rules limiting the distribution of free food in parks by restricting it to certain times or areas.

The New York Times quoted Las Vegas officials as sayibng the ban was not aimed at casual handouts, but mobile soup kitchens.

City spokesman David Riggleman said ending the soup kitchens' operations would encourage homeless people to go to a centre or charity offering services such as mental health evaluations or job placements.

Las Vegas has 12,000 homeless

your thoughts?
mine are all bad...

Ok, well, there is another alternatve. Bring he homeless to a nearest soup kitchen or some sort of charitable organization to give them food, clothing, and water.

Kind of silly to pass a law to make it a crime to give a homeless person a piece of food as a sign of generosity of the heart.

What a ******** law.

I am from vegas and it goes like this.
1. Plenty of soup kitchens, but they come with rehab programs that the people in the parks don't want to be a part of.
2.We have fat homeless people who would much rather be at the park in 110 degree heat instead of a nice cool soup kitchen with a rehab center, fresh changes of clothes, job interviews.
3. Clark county spends 16 thousand dollars a year worth per homeless person in funds given to charitable organzations.
So here is my tear for all of the homeless tweakers at the park *tear* .....yeah you smoke that because it's cheaper then food ...my ass.
Oh and lets not forget if they have an ID they can get food stamps and medical care. Then they complain about army recruiters coming to the soup kichens .....

i agree most homeless people i've seen are capable of not being homeless. exception crippled . example guy with dog that i see every day on way to dads he's always there and twice i saw him going into a house up the street. this would be a much more less extreme problem in say csoslavakis (yes i speleed it wrong) because people have less to give

Its not a ******** law. The parks are for everyone, not just homeless people. Speaking as a person who has fed homeless people, it shouldnt be done in a park anymore than it should be done at the mall.

If I take my kids to a park I dont want them to see smelly nasty people who will defecate or urinate in front of them with no concept of decency. Or harass us while we try to enjoy our time for handouts.

There is a time and a place for all things. The parks are not meant to be homeless shelters, but a place for everyone to enjoy.

my view is that parks and public places should be open to all.
if the homeless keep themselves relatively clean, dont harrass others and dont pollute the park, i would let them be there (where else can they go?)

BUT, they are usually filthy, annoying people.

i wish they would be helped, in the manner that fits them, and until they do, i guess its either they public or them.

placing a FINE on feeding them though...
thats a few steps too far...
why not give a reward for every ear you get of a homeless?
just leave them be...
they're usually not harming anyone anyway, hiding in thier shelters and whatnots

BTW, Orlando has adopted a similar law very recently as well.

Public distribution points.

The problem is not the occasional hand out, it's large scale handouts by mobile kitchens by (mostly suburban) church groups and other organisations. These produce areas of concentrated homeless people in facilities not designed to support them. Parks are not equipped to handle large crowds of often mentally disturbed and filthy people. This results in numerous complaints by nearby residents as well as criminal activity.

Keeping food distribution in a certain designated areas better allows one to control such problems.

Jailing people for feeding others?

May I ask the Christians here whether they would then execute a certain Martin for giving away half a coat?

Generally, it's just against feeding people outside of designated locations. I'm not familiar with the way Las Vegas does it, but if it's anything like the way Orlando does it then there's really no law against feeding the homeless, as long as it is done in the proper location.

and then, as the next step, they will set up the high seats, and when in season.......

I've no problem with feeding people, as long as the kids don't want to keep them.
If it is better for them, and in their best interests to have food given elsewhere, then that step should be taken. If the facilities are there, then they need to be used, rather than single purpose mobile units. It is better to get people off the streets.

Having said that, options need to be kept open. I'm all in favour of sensible charity, and showing compassion towards the unfortunate by helping them out of their circumstances.

I'm a fan of the notion of inviting the beggars and homeless into the grandest hall in the city for a very nice special meal.

Indeed! Nothing like watching two desperate men battle over a ham sandwhich! Now that's what I call entertainment!

Well, that's good fun too!

Inefficient, and not good form. The trophies would clash with the interior of my den.

When it comes to fun, efficiency is not of the upmost importance

Redecorate!

*Breaks out the wallpaper samples*

Ah, but efficiency has a fun all of its own, as the joys of hunting demonstrate.
If we are looking for any ways of 'reducing your population' to steal a little phrase from my old oppo Jake Featherston, then there are a whole lot of other options that can result in assorted opportunities to address other matters.

Read my first post and remember Tepes.

Admittedly when I first saw this thread I thought it was another example of the US becoming more authoritarian but from what people have posted on here about the problem it seems reasonable to me. I assume that the designated food places will be well publised to those who need it.
