FFH2 on laptops?

Mine works way better on my laptop than my normal pc. Of course my normal pc is 5 years old.

My laptop is 1.7 duocore or whatever
2 G RAM
512 video

I wouldn't go much lower on any of those really.

Sounds about right.

Also - are you actually able to put that laptop on top of your lap? Sounds like it'd melt your knees... :D

Running smoothly on my 2 year old:
Single-core Athlon XP 2.2GHz
1024 MB RAM
128 or 256 MB graphic card (ATI Mobility 700)

Although I don't play huge maps - the turn time is just way too long. On standard it's okay even in the end (but not that quick either ;) ).

I tried once and it wasn't very fun. ;) It's a desktop now.

I think i can give the best reference to this question.
My currently working configuration:
AMD Sempron 2800+
512 MB ram burned out to 256 MB Ram (biggest pain)
Nvidia GeForce FX Go 5200 64MB

The game as such is running very nicely, at medium detail level, @1024x768
However due to the small ram, I tend to play small or standard size games. At 512 MB ram, with 10 AIs, i experienced a little lag, this was however more due to the number of calculations the game needed to make.

After my ram went defective, the game turned different, I still play at same resolution, but most detail levels were lowered to low. Early game is still ok, but even mid game turns to be insanely long taking.

The current game that i am playing (playing as amurites, advanced start, standard map, 13 AIs, epic speed) is more like a game of chess rather than a turn based strategy. 5 turns per hour. However, its not like its unplayable, its just that it needs to check for all the functions, since im in late game, and 10 of the 13 AIs are my vassals.

As overall, its not so bad to play FFH on a laptop (15'' display btw), if you dont need all the fancy gfx.
RAM however is the most important thing this game needs. As you can read on many sites over the internet, CIV4 is not very optimized against memory leaks. And FFH needs even more processor and RAM resources due to so many functions. Although i was surprised that the thaw function, hasnt affected the gameplay very much even at 256 MB ram.

I wouldnt really recommend going lower than 1GB of ram for smooth gameplay experience, however i am the living proof, that you can run (i dont say its comfortably playable beyond mid game) CIV at a much lower configuration.

Good luck with the bidding :)

Same, no duo (damn expensive for a snail - toughbook)

Almost all laptops run vidcards off RAM, so 2GB is about min.

Your video has 512 (self, or max)? Did you self-modify the board or buy a gaming laptop? I'm computer illiterate, just asking to clarify for myself.

[minimum graphics, single unit, quick combat, no zoom, low texture]

I like single unit anyway.

In sum, buy yourself a GB or 2 of RAM ($100), and MP civ should be fine. You will also enjoy the speed in other applications. RAM is like the best money you can spend on a comp and you can install it yourself.

You can buy many laptops that have a real, dedicated gfx chip nowadays. They aren't even much more expensive, say 50-200€ (depending on the amount of gfx RAM they have).

And of course I do play Civ with the native resolution (1280x980; 15.4" widescreen) and high details (because it simply doesn't make a difference with lower settings).

256MB RAM aren't even enough to run WinXP properly, it's a wonder the game even starts. :D

I see a cheap computer with these specs:
DELL INSPIRON 1501
1.6 GHz
Chip Type: AMD Turion 64 Mobile
Hard Drive Capacity: 120 GB
Memory (RAM): 2 GB
Screen Size: 15 inches Primary Drive: DVD+/-RW
Features: 10/100 LAN Card, Carrying Case, Modem, Operating System, USB

But it's single core 1.6 GHz. I'm not sure if it will run smoothly... JDexter is the only other person here with single core and that's 2.2GHz.

Thoughts?

Civ IV is not designed to take advantage of multiple cores. Having multiple cores on your processor will not affect how well the game will run. I run a single core processor on my desktop just fine.

The specs necessary to run the game are no different for desktops or laptops. The problem with a lot of laptops is that they use onboard graphics with shared system memory rather than a dedicated graphics card. If you are buying a laptop for gaming, it is always best to ensure that it has a dedicated graphics gard (i.e. Nvidia Geforce Go or ATI Radeon Mobility).

The limiting factors are typically the graphics card and RAM.

I recommend at least a 6000 series Nvidia or a 900 series ATI graphic card with 128 MB of video memory minimum. I recommend at least 1 GB of system memory minimum. With these minimum specs you should be able to run at least standard sized maps.

Ideally you should have a better graphics card with 256 MB or more of video RAM and at least 2 GB of system RAM.

Even with the latest and greatest hardware, you might see the game start to bog down on huge maps with a lot of AI players, especially late in the game.

Edit: My laptop specs are...

Asus G2S
Intel Core 2 Duo T7700 2.4 GHz
2 GB DDR2 system memory
Nvidia Gforce 8600M GT with 256 MB video memory
17" WUXGA screen with a native resolution of 1920 x 1200

Unfortunately, it runs on Vista
My laptop will play huge maps, but it tends to bog down late in the game
