Fighting Wars

I am ready to wage war around chevalry time( knight), it mean i got at least 5-6 city size 12 with all city improvement up to cathedral. A city size 12 without any food in excess can produce knight in 3-5 turn. So when i got about 12 knight ( upgraded horsman) i start waring, i keep my force concentrated and i conquiere all my continent, i keep lots of city( early on not too much cultur so they wont flip), use military police under monarchy to keep order.

If they declare war on me earlier, then i will just capture 1-2 city or kill their units and ask peace ( i can get some tech or map doing that).

that has nothing to do with the topic. (scratches head)

Sorry, i read When do u want to fight a war.

Ok i keep my invasion force group togheter, occasionaly i will have 2 group if border are wide.

I usually play with republic or democratic governments and therefore like to complete the war as quick as possible so that war weariness is kept as low as possible

I therefore attack on all entry points possible into the enemy's territory, having built enough mobile armies to allow attacks on many cities at a time

In the current game I am playing I captured 6 cities in the first turn of war by attacking on multiple fronts using cavalry

As the war has continued and their city defences have been strengthened with conscripted riflemen it has become necessary to reduce the number of fronts, but I do switch fronts from time to time so they cannot mass too many defenders in one spot and prevent further inroads into their territories and cities

Often in the turns prior to the first attack I will build several cities near their cultural boundary and rush a library

An attack after the first expansion of the cultural boundaries will usually reach and capture cities on the first attack turn this way

my usual plan of attack is to have a number of pincers. At the most advanced age I'll have maybe 30 or 40 units in a stack (Stack of Death, I think there's a thread somewhere about that) and I'll push all my pincers forward at once. but also I'll have one stack of about 20 - 40 artilery defended by maybe 1 or 2 MI armies and I'll transport that to whatever pincer is encountering the most difficulty. sometimes when its a really huge city, like a capital, then I'll concentrate all my forces in a oner, with bombers and artilery in support.

At earlier times I totally forget about artilery (cannon's really) they just don't pack enough punch. when I've got say, Knights. I'll usually put them all in one stack unless there are cities I want to take out simultaneously (cities with iron or something like that)

I'm a fan of the SoD strategy, I like the idea of projecting a huge mass of units and just punch through any defence. As I said earlier there is (or was) a thread talking about the SoD strategy so if you want other idea's on how to attack then you could check that out.

PS- I'm on Monarch level. don't know if my strategy would work on the higher levels

I rarely use stack of death. I spread out my units in lines unless seigeing. This helps prevent stack wipeouts by offensive units and later nukes.

yeah ok I'll agree with you on the nuke part, cause the Egyptians in my game have placed about 8 Infantry and about 15 art on a hill and I'm just waiting for my ICBM's to come through so I can nuke them and steal the art. but when it comes to stack wipeout, wouldn't it be the same if you spread out your forces anyway. I mean if you have a stack of say 20 units and the enemy had forces that would wipe that out then there aint any point in putting them all in one stack of spread them out in a line, if the AI has the units and wants to wipe the stack out then he'll do it and also I've found that if there is a huge stack moving towards one of their cities then they will need to attack it and won't try and launch any attacks of their own. At least with SoD's you can put all your power into one (or two) thrusts. and also you can use all your bombard units to directly support that stack, if you spead out your units then you need to spread out your bombers and art and when that happens you won't get as much pacification of the enemy as what you would need for an easy victory

When u want to fight a war, is it best to take out the enemy one city at a time or spilt ur forces up to take on diffrent cities?

It depends on the circumstances. If you are powerful, then you can often divide your forces, grab a great deal of territory, and end the war quickly. If you are weak, but forced to attack, then concentrating your forces is usually best. This will minimize losses and maximize your potential to damage the enemy.

In almost every situation, start at one city then branch out slowly. Unless you expect strong resistance or counter-attacks, which the AI usually doesn't give, don't leave some of your force behind. The only time i split up forces before my first fallen city is when i have colony cities in other places that are threatened. In those cases a few offensive units and strong defense will be ample.
