Hmmm... What did I do differently? A lot, I think. I was playing one of my harder scenarios at Deity level. Here's what didn't happen this time around.
1) Didn't get into a protracted war with the Aztecs. Usually I have to devote a lot of resources to fighting them off whenever I play regardless of difficulty level. I think this is the first time I ever played a game where we weren't on the same continent within spitting distance from each other. (Then again, the map I created for this scenario is mucking HUGE!)
2) I didn't try to occupy as much ground, keeping my cities closer together... my citizens seemed happier and it was a little easier to keep a hold on corruption.
Chain of events... Branched out to get to the sea as quickly as I could. I started off smack dab in the middle of the largest chucnk of land (The map was a huge size "pangea" with thin land bridges connecting all the continents. This actually made it a challenge later in the game, because I couldn't just sail from north to south or vice versa... actually had to establish a northern and a southern port for moving around effectively. Got into a testosterone competition with Hamurabi relatively early in the game. He really shouldn't stack troops up in my territory!!! Next, ended up getting into it with Jean D'Arc. The barbarians were starting to hack me off to no end, and thankfully, the Great Wall also triggered a golden age for me... that was a nice boost in the research for me. I got a few decades of growth, research and peace time thanks to the fact that with Babylon and France out of the picture, all that was left close at hand was India... No threats, even when they were annoyed with me.
Started branching out onto the first land bridge, and ended up getting into it first with the Persians, then with the Japanese. Wiped out the Persians, then with a lot of tech trading and alliance making, managed to form a coalition against the Japanese. Halfway through the Japan campaign, Egypt contacts me making their first demand. I told them to pack sand and they declared war on me. By this time, I was already building my SS, but was in need of the superconductor. War and a few other things were forcing me to divert resources, so my research time was godawful slow by this point. Had to do a lot of sailing and transferring to even get near the Egyptians in order to stop them before they reached me in their war. Threw the game's only ICBM at Japan's second to last city. the Mongol(Chinese)-English-Roman-Zulu coalition had Japan's last city surrounded and we were all pounding at the Japanese forces... finally the superconductor came along, the last two SS components completed, the Mongols made it to space, game was over!
When I got home, I changed the saved scenario a bit, took some of the resources off of the map and added a bit more land to the map. played about 20 years in this version 2.0 of this scenario. My official Civ III record is now 1 Diplomatic, 1 Space 17 Cultural, and 25 Domination victories.
