All of the Major World Religions are waiting for.... Someone.
Perhaps adding that Someone to the game would complete the experience.

A list of Great Persons and Religions (In order of preference) who may recruit them.
Some Religions are capable of recruiting a second (if they pass on the first one)

Al Mahdi (Islam, Zoroastrianism)
Peter the Roman (Catholicism, Eastern Orthodoxy)
Jesus Christ (Protestantism, Eastern Orthodoxy, Catholicism)
Reborn Dalai Lama (Sikhism, Taoism, Shinto, Confuscianism)
The Next Buddha (Buddhism, Sikhism, Taoism, Shinto, Confusianism)
Vishnu Kalki (Hinduism, Sikhism, Buddhism, Taoism, Shinto, Confusianism)
Elijah the Prophet (Judaism, Protestantism, Catholicism, Eastern Orthodoxy)
Nostradamus (Custom Religions)

*Custom Religions get Nostradamus, but if they pass, they have a chance to get every other great person listed here, provided their Religions either pass or aren't in the game.)

The Great Persons themselves, their effects, and when they are first available. (Warning: These great persons are very powerful, making the competition for Religion that much more important)

1. Nostradamus
Info: Prophetic Occult Astrologer and Seer.
Type: Great Scientist
Availability: Renaissance Era
Passive Effects: +2 sight to adjacent land units, units always have double the intel on enemy movements combat bonus. May be used in conjunction with great generals. Adjacent Spies operate 50% faster and 1 level higher then usual. (If you park him there until they finish)
Retirement: All Holy Site's provide +2 Science. All Science Buildings provide Faith equal to their yield.

2. Al Mahdi
Info: Great military leader Islam is waiting for.
Type: Great General
Availability: Renaissance Era
Passive Effects: Adjacent Units gain +7 combat strength and ignore terrain. When Conquering a city, it is converted to his Religion, and all nearby cities lose 150 points in other religions, and gain +150 of his.
Retirement: All Grievances against his Civilization are resolved, BUT lose gold, faith, and diplomatic favor in reparation to them for every 25 grievances resolved. Grievances 200 and above also award them science.

3. Peter the Roman (also called Petrus Romanus)
Info: In the prophecies of Father Malachi "Petrus Romanus will shepherd his flock, and then the terrible judge will judge his people."
Type: Great Merchant
Availability: Industrial Era
Passive Effects: Adjacent units who defeat a non barbarian unit are upgraded to Corps. Adjacent Units generate 50 faith when receiving a promotion. Adjacent Spies operate 50% faster and at 1 level higher per turn while adjacent to him. Adjacent Religious Units Heal and gain one Spread Religion Charge when defeating an enemy Religious Unit in Theological Combat. +5 to Theological Combat Strength.
Retirement: The word Catholic means universal. Builds a global communication network in the Commercial Hub of a City, City gains +4 gold, faith, science, and culture. All Cities in the world gain 1 follower of his religion. (This instantly converts 1 or 2 population cities)

*To upgrade units, the proper civics and technologies must be completed.

4. Jesus Christ
Info: He returns riding a white horse at Battle of Armageddon, with a sword that proceeds from his mouth
Type: Great General
Availability: Industrial Era
Passive Effects: +7 Combat Strength and +1 movement to Adjacent Units. +10 Theological Combat Strength to Adjacent Religious Units, and their "Spread Religion" damages adjacent enemy units and cities, in addition to converting them. The final spread religion charge of any Adjacent Apostle erodes the faith of other religions as if the Apostle was a Proselytizer., and reduces that cities loyalty by 30.
Retirement: All cities in the world lose 1-4 population to the Rapture, (Larger cities lose more) and followers of other religions are reduced by at least 1, in addition to reduction caused by population loss. All Cities that follow his Religion gain +2 faith per turn. +1 gold for every foreign city following his Religion.

5. The Next Buddha
Info: Someone wise and worthy enough to become the next Buddha
Type: Great Engineer
Availability: Industrial Era
Passive Effects: Adjacent Religious units lose 70% HP instead of using a charge when spreading religion. (Keep them alive with Guru's. This preserves Apostles with rare promotions such as Proselytizer.) Adjacent Guru's also heal Adjacent Military Units for 15 HP. Newly recruited Adjacent Guru's gain +1 charge.
Adjacent Warrior Monks +5 Combat Strength.
Retirement: Workshops generate Faith in all cities equal to their yield (+3) Holy Sites generate +1 production.

6. Reincarnated Dalai Lama
Info: The next incarnation of the Dalai Lama.
Type: Great Admiral
Availability: Renaissance Era
Passive Effects: +7 combat strength to adjacent naval units, and +1 movement. When adjacent naval units kill a unit, it acts as if a religious unit was defeated, lowering all other religions by 100 in nearby cities.
Adjacent Religious Units may convert damaged naval units to his side with a spread religion charge.
Retirement: converts all citizens of the retirement city to his religion. Heals all Naval units. Grants 3 Warrior Monks. +5 Combat Strength to all Warrior Monks.

7. Elijah the Prophet
Info: From Scripture "Elijah returns before the great and terrible day of the lord"
Type: Great Merchant
Availability: Industrial Era
Passive Effects: Adjacent Units gain +5 Combat Strength when defending. (In addition to any great general bonus) Adjacent Religious Units gain gold when spreading religion. Adjacent military units gain gold when defeating enemy units or capturing cities. Adjacent Guru's gain Science when healing religious units.
Fire From Heaven: Adjacent Siege Units +7 combat strength when attacking.
Retirement: Gain 2 Envoys and 666 Gold. Day of the Lord: Generates severe weather everywhere in the world. All Volcano's have a Catastrophic Eruption, All Rivers flood, other Area's get Droughts, Hurricanes, Tornado's, and Blizzards. All Nuclear power plants have a Meltdown. All Civilizations go into Anarchy. These effects are less for his civilization. All population loss from disasters removes followers of other religions.

8. Vishnu Kalki
Info: 10th Avatar of Vishnu, rides a white horse, carries a flaming sword.
Type: Great General
Availability: Modern Era
Passive Effects: +10 Combat Strength to Adjacent Units when attacking, -10 combat strength defending.
+10 theological Combat Strength and +100 to religious spreads.
Retirement: All Walls for every city in the world are damaged to various degrees and need to be repaired. Instantly advances the world into the next era (may not retire unless 20 turns or less to end of era.) and guarantees a golden age for his civilization. His Civilization gains 3 turns worth of yields instead of 1 when ending the turn after he retires. (Therefore all of his cities gain 3 turns of production, food growth, Gold, Faith, Culture, Science, Diplomatic Favor, Resources.)

*Kalki is the strongest, and the last to be made available. Kalki derives from Kali, meaning Time. His role in sacred texts is to advance the age. He cannot retire unless there are 20 turns or less for the world to move into the next era. Instantly takes the world into the next era, granting his own civilization a golden age.

Final Thoughts: they all do something interesting, passively and on retirement. Al Mahdi spreads his religion when he conquers cities, Jesus Christ enables his Apostles to damage enemy units and cities as if the word of God were an actual weapon. Nostradamus has inside knowledge about enemy movements and creates union of Science and Religion. Elijah is very effective with Siege Units and Guru's. The next Buddha is very effective with Guru's, allowing them to heal Military Units. All of their effects are intended to aid Religious Endeavors and are often very potent on the battlefield.

These would replace Great Prophets on the Great Person page, which is long after they are all gone. (And cannot appear if any remain) Holy Site great person points become useless after that, and the prophets are gone way early in the game. So these would be earned with GP points, as well as require a hefty sum or gold or faith, or something. Given their strength, you aren't just going to inherit them.

This list definitely isn't asking for trouble. :p Worth remembering that Jews and Muslims prohibit visual depictions of sacred figures...

Al Mahdi (Islam, Zoroastrianism)
The Zoroastrian eschatological figure is Saoshyant.
