i built my first iron works playing C3C. first iron works with this expansion pack.

came close a couple other times but no cigar.

how rare is it to be able to build one now? i think its a little less likely than with PTW.

and its in a city not too far from my capital, making it worth it for a change.

Not sure of the numbers, but I do not see it very often. Many of the times I could build it, I don't as it is too many turns to make it worth the trouble.

It is sweet when it is available in a core city.

I got lucky enough to build the iron works in one of my core cities! That place was building a tank a turn, with shields to spare.

Once, someone built the Iron Works in Paris on Marla's World Map... They got up to 216 shields... :mischief:

I did get it in a core city once with mountains and hills, and floodplains to feed the happy iron workers. I got the tech for Shakespeares Theater from a peace treaty and decided to build it in the iron works city. With the Military Academy and later a nuclear plant, armies in three turns.

Most of the time I get it it's in some miserable location with no food or no shields.

I've never seen the AI build it.

buahahaha! i once built it in a core city and got over 200 shields per turn :D

but in reality it is rare i have an opportunity to build it. the last time i built it the city got taken a couple turns after its completion.

how rare the Iron Works is is highly dependent on the size of your map and how many civs play. the reason for this is clear. if you've got a huge 200x200 map with only four civs on it for example you will then have only a very small number of irons and coals distributed over an immense space. you cannot build Iron Works except in a city with both iron AND coal in its radius and the probability of this occuring is very small on such a huge map.

only built it once in a city that was moderately corrupt. it is a great Small Wonder, but you need conditions to be just right to build it. :(

I once had an Iron Works city with aluminum on a hill, a wheat on a flood plain, several hills, saltpeter on a mountain, and all shield grasslands. I had to raze a city that the idiot AI had built, though... mindless Xerxes missed the Iron Works by like one tile in his city placement.

I forget how much the city produced... it was a very large number, though. As I recall, I used it to build most of the spaceship parts and nukes, since it would have wasted production to build anything else. If only it had had uranium.... :mischief:

I had one game where there were 3 or 4 cities where I could've built the IW. I plumped for the city that already had my Forbidden Palace in it :D 129 shields with a nuke plant....

[Edit] That city had Aluminium too!

I just built an ironworks in a half decent city, and I say half-decent because half of the land around it was tundra!

What is Iron Works? :mischief:

Small Wonder. Requires Coal and Iron in city radius. Increases production 100%.

I have played civ3 and various xpacks for three years and I've been able to build it ONCE. It was a good city though, 60 sheilds before any other production enhancing improvements. Was sweet.

the city i built the iron works in was in jungle and i quickly threw a bunch of workers a the city and had it cleared in no time but its all grass land with one mountain. not the best iron works ive ever built but its something.

i guess im so excited because i hardly ever get to build them. almost had a chance to build it in another city but that city was off by a tile and was too far away anyhow.

at size 12 it was producing 88 shields, not great but now its growing so its getting better. corruption is 4 wasted tiles. not too bad IMO. just discovered motorized transportation and i feel the need for a tank or 200...

;) I know what it is my friend. The thing is that you "never" get to build it.

Ahhh. I literally didn't know what it was until that thing popped up in my game. Three years of playing civ 3/c3c and I had assumed that it was taken out of the game and never bothered to see what it did. :)
