Shouldn't we research some naval technology and try to find out if there's more on this giant rock in space than just our continent?

This could give us extra traderoutes, religions, technologies and new friends.
If we do it soon, we might be the first to circumnavigate the globe giving us a nice bonus.

That is truly a Dutch sentiment! ;)

Seems like a good idea, but how long will the research and prod'n take considering our dire need of economic stimulation, Minister?

If you fall of the Earth you can still land on the back of the gaint turtles that are pulling us around the universe

It's a tricky one. My first instinct is to say that we wait and try to sort our economy out a bit. However, it is likely that we are where we are (which is possibly way behind some other civs) by doing things a bit at a time and waiting. Maybe it is the time for bold policies (one of the reasons I liked crushing Mongolia, even if it hasn't helped our economy).

You might have to do a bit of persuading (spin). Perhaps, rather than asking a simple question, you need to go on a publicity drive and tell us what marvellous things will result from sending out boatloads of hairy axemen to ravage and pillage and ... err ... all that stuff. If you tell it well enough, you might well pick up enough votes to pull it off. :)

It wasn't my intention to sail away now(well, we could send a first galley to look), but after we've finished currency and perhaps code of laws (depending on our economy) we can try getting compass, metal casting, machinery and optics, and then we can launch our caravels, and after calendar and astronomy we can make even better boats and can start ruling all the world's seas.

Well I never came out with this idea publicly, mainly because I haven't tested it until now. I think the way we can get back in the game, is by taking a big risk. We research the most advanced tech we can (as long as the other civs don't have it.) Once we finally research it (which we will have to devote a lot of money to it) we open ourselves up to trade.

When we aquire said tech, we go to each civ, and ask to trade said tech for a tech we don't have. If we know 4 civs, it's possible to get 6 or so techs out of them.

I tested this in a game on the diffuculty of prince (wait maybe it was higher) however. I was in the same situation (although out of all the civs I knew (7) I was in last.) The first advanced tech I researched, I traded away to almost every civ, and in one turn I gained 6 techs. The turn after that I gained more. This put me back in the game with a middle score. I then researched another tech, since I was now more caught up, and this time got 3 techs, and a lump sum of about 450 Gold.

Not only could we be extorting techs, but we would be gaining superior miltary technology. I think we are far enough behind to start thinking a little more radical (which is ironic, since I can't stand liberals)

Sail away across the sea? And die in a giant waterfall? Who ( in the name of gods ) would go on such a crazy jurney?
