Finding cities in unexplored territories

I tried to search the forum for an old thread about this but couldn't find any:confused:

If you have an unexplored territory on your map, and you know there is a civ in the territory, there is a way to see where their cities are. If you change to viewing pieces and click a square, that square is marked and centered, but only if there is no city in that square.
So if you position the cursor in a square next to the marked and centered square and click, that square is centered. Your cursor is now positioned over the same square, relative to the centered square. If you do one row at a time you can find all the cities on the map. Probably a bug, time consuming, and if you really want to find their cities you might as well save, reveal map, and load the saved file.
I don't know how useful it is, but I've never seen it in this forum.:) I'd call it a cheat.

This seems like a lot of work for very little gain. Why not sent out units (caravan, dip, warrior, or scout, etc) to clear the area. It takes game turns, but you get the huts, and explore the terrain for future settlement.

Even when you find A.I. cities your way, you still have to send units to deal with them.

If you're that bothered to find cities then an easier way is to wait until that civ has built a wonder. All the cities with wonders can be viewed as if they are one of your own cities with the Find City tool in your Kingdom menu. You can choose one of your cities and the map will centre on it. Likewise with AI cities. This cannot really give you an enormous advantage but can help you point your triremes in the right direction. It is probably the most useless cheat but if you are desperate to know then try it by all means.

I would have no idea if this has been posted here since I'm a newbie here. However, if Eye's used to post strategy here, I'm sure he would have mentioned it.

It has been posted a "LONG" time ago at "other" Civ Sites ;)

This trick can be very useful if you find a whale or other special, and you want to know if it might be being used by another civ before you plop a city down. You only need to click on a few squares to find out an answer.

I know some people spend their time between turns in MP just randomally clicking on the board to see if they can learn something while they are bored. Because IT IS BORING.

However, this feature, when used in combination with the "nearest city" feature available in your city screen for your wandering units can help you zero in on your opponents really quickly.

Yeah... Eyes of Night, and many other names. He still posts frequently at that "other" site ;)

I know he is banned here, but that doesn't mean he can't be mentioned... does it ;)

He did used to post a lot of good strategies... and he is still one of the top MP players.

 I don't even remember how many things he did, but he said things that were not true. I remember he tried to smash shadowdale into the ground more than a dozen time, and kept saying that he had beaten shad in several MP games, while Shad had never played anyone else than TF and other staff members of CFC.

LOL, I just used this earlier today when playing GOTM 16. The pesky French had just completed the Pyramids, which I normally like to get (I took Col & HG, and was building MP at the time). I took my newly bribed barb trireme, one of my dips, and set off to even the score... and the "find" function centered teh map on the spot of darkness where Lyon was located. A few turns later, MP revealed paris was the capital, and once my Trireme got close, my Dip hopped off, ran into an unexpected city (Orleans), bribed it, built another diplomat, which then used the Find function to home in for the last 4 or 5 tiles, and it was mine.

Ming, regarding EoN: to my knowledge, EoN is banned by CFC, but to mention him is of course not. I had my share of "discussions" with him last summer and even took an insult or two, but he is an intelligent player, though obviously with some serious character flaws, not to mention an unnaturally high regard of himself. Though arrogant and insulting, he's evidently a good MP player, according to those that have played him (I'm not an MP player). His attitude is really somewhat sad, as he obviously would not back up such direct braggadocio face to face. It can be argued that he actually provided a little humorous spice at certain times, particularly in his ongoing discussions with several people (esp. Hierophant) about how he would not play them in MP until the were "good" enough to beat certain other players that he listed. But unfortunately, his attacks on some people like Shadowdale got too vicious, and also in the wrong forums, which is presumeably why he attracted widespread enmity and ultimately a ban.

Bonus Note: Eyes of Night used to trash Apolyton on the CFC forums, too. For instance, Apolyton's Great Library: "Don't bother. The so called GL on Apolyton is nothing more than poorly written material that has tons of errors and useless information."

A 25 May 01 post he made to Slow Thinker:

So EoN was pretty much an island unto himself, LOL.... :)
