For background, I had a bit of trouble early on with Poland to the North and Assyria to the south. It wasn't long before I was at war with Assyria as he had forward settled me with 5-6 cities and with that around 5-6 cities worth of basic warrior/archer production. The only city I have managed to snag was Shanghai up north with FoY and four horses as well as a good defensive city against Poland. Having a scout placed in line of view of Assyria, he was definitely rushing those military units so in response I rushed horseman into catapult/hanging gardens tech. Unfortunately for him those aren't the best units to siege a tradition engineer capital with and as you can expect, as soon as I got my horses online it didn't work out for him. Soon after working a couple catapults, I was able to dominate Assyria pretty early and soon after worked on Poland. Poland actually took a long time because he managed to get castle walls but through attrition, I was able to push through around 50 turns ago.
Now onto the current state of the game. I have lots of gold and I have a lot of heavily trained units save for the upgraded crossbowman that I only built to utilize China's UI. I'm also slowly working my navy from the ground up. I will be building a new city soon in the southeast tundra to get the 6+2 iron for further needs. However, as you can see from the screenshots posted, I am severely behind the Celts at 6 techs behind and 2 behind Carthage. Also despite being a culture focused civ, I am still one policy behind the Celts. I am doing my best playing catchup with four recently built tradeships getting a cool 60 science total from the Celts as well as 2 spies placed, one in carthage and another in a Celt city. But it is a slow catchup game and I fear the disparity will likely get worse unless I make some moves outside of my continent because as you can see, the Netherlands are getting smoked by a conglomerate of high tech tercios, line infantry, and musketmen backed by insane resource management. I am thinking it will likely be only a hundred turns before she either defeats him or forces him into capitulation at which point she will definitely turn her head at me. And that turn she declares war on me is going to be a sad one.
But I'm not sure where my strategy should go outside of moving outside the continent. I think I definitely need to increase my unit cap by increasing my population, but as of the moment, Spain and Venice are the only ones I can confidently fight a winning war. That will also be super difficult because Spain is running a fealty culture civ as well. And at the moment I conquer the continent, I will likely have to confront the Celts while also always looking behind my back at the other powerful civ in the game, Carthage. What are some ways I can improve my game do you guys recommend. Any changes from what I already did? What should I do moving forward? Any tricks of the trade that people who play at emperor+ difficulty have? Thank you for any advice and I will provide updates and more screenshots if requested.
