I just had my first two raw Harings (with chopped onions). hmmmmmmmm!

Yesterday, the first ships returned from the sea in Scheveningen harbour, where the first can of haring was sold for 60.000 euros. Next saturday we celebrate "Vlaggetjesdag" (flags day)!

So, my dear CFC debating friends, feel free to spread your disgust about this typical Dutch habit!

Haring? Do you mean herring?

If so, I actually like fermented herring, so my disgust is rather limited.
Haring is dutch for herring yes.

Fermented??????
Never heared of that. You ought to eat them raw, right out of the sea, with only the head and organs out.

Why on earth would you do that when you can eat them half rotten?

I also had my first raw herring with onions today.

"Grab the raw herring by the tail, throw your head back; chin up and just lower the herring into your mouth and bite"

Becuase it tastes so good!

I've never tried fermented herring, nor have I ever seen it....

Remind me to try it if I go to the Netherlands again.

It's a specialty form northern Sweden, that foreigners tend not to appreciate. The Swedish name is surströmming.

If you ever find it, don't open the cans indoors. The smell is pretty strong.

When seeing the thread title, I anticipated posting a rant about how hunting hares is wrong. I miss raw herrings so much!

Although, I used to have my raw herrings in a white bun with onions. I do not think I could eat them by themselves.

Pickled herring is disgusting imho :vomit:

Uh? Ewww...

Herring! I thought this thread was about a resurgence of blood sports in the UK.

That's a relief.

Pickled herring I like. Not so sure about fermented variety... but would try one just to be curious.

That actually is a tradition here as well, the season is official opened every year with rituals that seem to be exactly the same.

I don't like fish, though.

Love Dutch herring or any herring for that matter. What I cannot stand is drinking tea with it :blah:

Well, Rik sais they have it at IKEA, so I guess I should try it soon, this surströmming.

Here's what becomes of it:

I used to buy herring marinated in a sour cream sauce - much like you'd find in a Kosher Delicatessen. I haven't seen it in grocery stores for several years. A real shame because it was delicious.
