I'm a n00b to the Civ games. Never played any of them till Civ5
Actually, a n00b to strategy games in general as i never have played them really.
But i've gotten hooked on Civ5 and have gradually gotten a bit better at it.
Today i decided to try out King difficulty as i'd won a few games on Prince
and figured it was time to move up and see how badly i got my ass kicked.
I like random punishment, so i went standard size w/ random map + random Civ
(as long as it was one i'd not played already), and got Montezuma with some kind of large
continents type map (not sure which as i don't know them well).
I think my starting position was somewhat crap, but i didn't reload.
Randomly good or bad, that's how it was.
I figured i'd better go Cultural due to Montezuma's cultural boost for killing barbs/enemies.
That, and although i've heard it's the hardest, i've gotten more wins Culturally than anything else.
I got two cities up, and then a third.
But then America got pissy , and proceeded to DoW me several times
for the first few hundreds years which wasted a lot of resources
as i had to continually pump out military to hold them off.
They bought out all the City States on our continent, and i just could not afford to buy them off.
I lost city #3 in the second war but luckily got it back a few turns later
& then made sure i built up defenses.
Due to bee-lining the tech tree somewhat for certain wonders,
i got way behind in military, and tech in general due to focusing on Culture so much.
For the longest time i didn't even have sea units to explore with,
so until way later than normal i couldn't even see how well the other Civs were doing,
or where they were.
When i finally met them all, i knew i was in trouble, as Rome & Mongolia were way ahead!
Luckily due to America being the only other Civ on the same landmass as me,
they didn't prove to be a war issue until later on Gandhi foolishly decided to attack me.
I spammed out Great Artists & as many wonders as i could
and ended up with eight Cultural Landmark towers in my main city IIRC.
Once i'd built up defenses for my cities and parked my [far crappier] military on my perimeter,
America finally left me along for the last part of the game, which was a huge relief.
That left me mostly free to focus on wonders & cash for buying the Cultural Civs.
Later on, Gandhi decided to attack me for no good reason other than
me refusing some ******** request (we'd been on good terms all game).
He sent a hilarious attack in and waited
until his units were all about to get onto my land before DoW.
Of course, that pushed him all back,
which gave me enough time to move my units along the coast to hold him off.
I got WAY behind in tech and got beat to a number of decent wonders,
but was pumping out enough Culture toward the end it didn't matter.
It became the usual click next turn & pray no one DoWs till the end,
as a few of my enemies had nukes
& were already had Apollo and were working on spaceships parts.
In the end, i prevailed, and won with the lowest score of everyone haha.
Attached are some screenies of the madness
Final score. Haha.
Pretty much worst in everything.
The policies.
I went Tradition then jumped over to finish Liberty. Then i believe i finished Tradition/started Patronage.
Then finished up Freedom & and then Patronage (cannot remember exact order).
Honor i grabbed last as i was worried i might get stuck in some wars & it didn't seem like going Liberty at the end would make sense.
Log of teh win
And here's Gandhi's attack, hehe.
If he'd DoW that turn, i'd have been in trouble, but no, he got all his units all the way to shore before doing so LOL.
